JACKSON, Miss. — A gritty and tough effort by the Millsaps men's soccer team was not enough as Sewanee scored a pair of second-half goals, claiming a 2-1 decision on Sunday at Harper Davis Field.
The Majors struck first with a goal in the opening half, while the Tigers held a 13-3 shot-attempt advantage. Senior
Michael Hamauei stopped four shots, two in each half, but could not prevent the Sewanee (9-1-3, 1-0-1) comeback. The visitors held a 6-2 shots on-target count and 4-1 corner-kick opportunity advantage as well.
Sophomore
Ellis Dykes scored one goal on his only shot, scoring in his second consecutive match.
Junior
Braden Walters provided an assist, contributing to the team's offensive efforts. Freshman
Christian Lopez added the primary assist, connecting with Dykes on a nearly identical goal from Friday. Sophomore
Kaleb Wilkins provided the Majors' other shot on goal in tightly contested struggle.
The first half of the match saw the Majors take an early lead with a goal by Dykes in the eighth minute, assisted by Lopez and Walters. Lopez booted the ball ahead and Dykes used his wheels to collect and make a move around the Sewanee keeper. He finished it off with his right foot and found the lower-right corner.
The Tigers responded with several offensive attempts, including a shot by Isaac Rasheed at 13:33 and another by Domenic Desmond a minute later, both saved by Hamauei.
Despite Sewanee's three corner kicks and multiple shots, including one of the crossbar in the 40th minute, they were unable to equalize. Millsaps maintained their 1-0 lead as the half concluded, with Hamauei recording crucial saves to preserve the advantage.
Millsaps and Sewanee resumed play, but the second half saw the Tigers take control. In the 51st minute, Stokes McConnell capitalized on a penalty kick to help tie the match. A turnover resulted into a chance and foul in the box.
McConnell struck again in the 80th minute after nifty passing deep in Major territory across the field from right to left, making it 2-1.
Wilkins attempted a response in the 82nd minute, but his shot was saved by Sewanee's Nathan Vanhoeve. Despite the Majors' efforts, the match concluded with Sewanee securing a 2-1 road win.
The Majors will now take a brief break from conference play and next host Belhaven University in the Riverside Derby, beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Live video and live stats will be available at gomajors.com.
