JACKSON, Miss. — The Millsaps women's basketball team fell to Belhaven University, 82-73, in a tense overtime matchup inside The Hangar Dome on Tuesday. The game remained tightly contested, with seven ties and nine lead changes. Millsaps capitalized on second-chance opportunities, scoring 16 points, while the Blazers' bench contributed 41 points, helping them secure the win in extra time.
Junior
Garin Freeman scored 18 points and tied a career-high with five steals while also contributing seven assists. Senior
Elyse Warren boasted a double-double where she finished with 17 points and collected 13 rebounds off the glass, including 11 on the defensive end.
Sophomore
Anaya Lewis added nine rebounds and scored six points. Junior
Tia Anderson posted 11 points and recorded two blocks while adding 12 rebounds to tally a double-double performance against the Blazers.
The first quarter began with Millsaps taking an early lead as Warren made two free throws following an offensive rebound. Senior
Lexus Keyes then extended the lead to 5-0 with a 3-pointer assisted by Freeman with 8:59 minutes on the clock.
Millsaps maintained momentum with sophomore
Ashlyn Hafley's 3-pointer at 5:23, again aided by Freeman nifty assist. The teams exchanged leads throughout the quarter, and the period remained closely contested, with several lead changes.
Millsaps' defense, including blocks by Anderson and Lewis, kept the game tight. Belhaven closed the period with a fast-break layup leaving the score tied at 14–14 with the Majors staying locked in.
The Majors shifted momentum in the second quarter with a decisive 23–11 scoring run, highlighted by key plays from Warren and Freeman. The scoring was capped with a Freeman 3-pointer assisted by junior
Bailey Johnson at the buzzer to end the second quarter as the Millsaps fans chanted from their seats.
Millsaps maintained their lead in the third quarter, outscoring Belhaven 22-20. Warren led the charge, scoring a layup at 6:54, followed by Freeman and Keyes contributing with back-to-back layups to push the score to 43–31. Millsaps maintained control, capitalizing on free throws, converting seven of eight attempts.
The Majors also dominated the boards with a 11-7 rebounding advantage, which helped counteract their seven turnovers. The period ended with Millsaps holding a 59-45 advantage
Belhaven's effort closed the gap with a 15-point run in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter and pushed ahead, 64-62. The teams traded layups as a pair of Freeman free throws tied the game at 66-66 with 2:31 remaining in regulation.
Warren made a free throw and Belhaven answered with another layup with 1:04 left. Anderson was then fouled with 38 seconds left and sank another free throw to knot the game up at 68-68. Both teams would have one more possession but the game went to overtime.
Belhaven seized momentum in extra time with a perfect 5-for-5 shooting effort, and holding the Majors to 1-of-5. The Blazers escaped with an 82-73 victory.
