Women’s Basketball’ Resilient Fourth Quarter Tops Austin College, 63-55 on Wednesday

Warren Nets Double-Double, Freeman Tallies 20 Points in Texas Triumph

AUSTIN, Texas — The Millsaps women's basketball team emerged victorious over Austin College, 63-55 following a dominate fourth quarter performance on Wednesday afternoon inside Hughey Gymnasium. 
 
Millsaps (7-2) secured the win by dominating in the paint with 40 points and clamping down defensively, limiting Austin (4-5) to just 11 points in the final quarter despite a 28-point eruption in the third quarter. 
 
The Kangaroo bench outscored the Majors, 29-11 but Austin was held to only 36 percent offensively (21-of-59). The Majors also combined for 10 steals defensively against their opponents. 
 
Junior Garin Freeman showcased offensive prowess with 20 points, draining 6-of-13 shots from the field and converting 8-of-11 at the line. She supplemented her scoring with four assists, three rebounds and two steals.
 
Senior Elyse Warren delivered a double-double performance, contributing 17 points and 15 rebounds, featuring five offensive boards, alongside two steals and a block. The Memphis, Tenn., product also went 6-of-12 from the floor. 
 
Junior Tia Anderson added 15 points, knocking down 7-of-9 attempts. She also collected five rebounds and two steals.  
 
Sophomore Anaya Lewis chipped in eight points and three boards to assist the offensive attack. 
 
Millsaps set the tone early with Anderson scoring a basket and a 3-pointer within the first two minutes, establishing a quick pace. Austin responded with a three-point play, but the Majors maintained control. 
 
A senior Maddy Maw 3-pointer further extended the lead to 12–3. Despite a late 3-pointer from Austin, Millsaps concluded the first quarter leading 14–8. 
 
In the second quarter, the Majors widened the gap, achieving a 12-point advantage. Despite turnovers from both teams, the Majors maintained their dominance, closing the quarter with a 26–16 lead. 
 
After a brief Austin 5-0 rally to begin the third quarter, the Majors answered to pull back ahead, 31-24. 
 
The Kangaroos though battled back and took their first lead of the game following a circus floater off the top of the backboard. The make made it 37-36 with 3:48 left in the third quarter. A flurry of 3-pointers and a 7-0 run gave Austin a 44-38 advantage. 
 
Austin held a narrow 44-43 margin entering the final 10 minutes of action. 
 
A back-and-forth struggle followed with teams trading the lead three times until Millsaps grabbed control. 
 
Anderson gave the Majors a boost after tallying a layup with 4:46 remaining. The Majors grabbed a 53-48 advantage. 
 
A nifty driving layup by Freeman through multiple defenders pushed Millsaps further ahead moments later. 
 
Austin College cut the deficit to five points, but the teams traded steals as Freeman scored another crucial layup with 1:39 on the clock, making it 59-52. 
 
The Kangaroos answered with a 3-pointer, but Anderson responded with a spin-around jumper, keeping the Majors up by six points. Millsaps cruised in the final moments to a 63-55 triumph.
