Softball Challenged by No. 11 Huntington in Three-Game Series

Hawks Best Majors in Trio of Close Contests in Montgomery

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Millsaps softball team fell to No. 11 Huntingdon, 5-2, 6-2, and 1-0 in a three-game midweek series at the Lucinda Samford Softball Field on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Game 1: 5-2, L

Sophomore Allana Vasquez batted 2-for-3 alongside one RBI. The Udine, Italy native also pitched six innings in the circle where she recorded two strikeouts and zero walks, holding the Hawks to three earned runs.

Sophomore Ella Morgan Sears, freshman Kirsten Gilchrist, classmate Brynn Arena (RBI) and sophomore Kadence Cannon (run) each recorded a hit.

In the bottom of the first inning, Huntington took a 2-0 lead following a two-run homer.

Moments later, Huntingdon scored off a passed ball with the bases loaded to extend their lead to 3-0.

Huntingdon moved ahead 4-0 following a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning.

Millsaps got on the board in the very next inning after Arena reached first base, bringing senior Alli Nolen home.

Huntingdon, however, expanded their margin to 5-1 with another sacrifice fly in its half of the fourth inning.

In the top of the fifth frame, Millsaps cut the contest down to 5-2 after Vasquez singled to right field to score Cannon.

Huntingdon maintained their lead the remainder of the contest to defeat the Majors in Game One.

Game 2: 6-2, L

Jimmie (two RBIs, stolen bases) and Cannon both batted 2-for-3 in Game Two on Tuesday.

Freshman Hailey Peterson and Sears (hit by pitch) each registered a hit and scored a run. Vasquez finished with a hit for the Majors.

Peterson also pitched six innings in the circle where she struck out two batters while only allowing just two walks.

In the top of the first inning, a bases-loaded single by Jimmie scored both Peterson and Sears to give the Majors a 2-0 lead.

Huntingdon recovered at the bottom of the fifth to claim their first lead of the contest at 4-2. The Hawks used four hits and an error to jump ahead.

Moments later the Hawks added two runs in the bottom of the sixth, extending their margin to 6-2.

In the top of the seventh inning, Millsaps looked to make a comeback after Cannon singled to second base and later advanced to third base on a passed ball.

However, Huntingdon would catch the final out on a pop up to collect a 6-2 win.

Game 3: 1-0, L

Nolen and Vasquez each recorded one hit in Game Three on Wednesday.

Vasquez struck out four batters in four innings, allowing three hits, a run, and two walks.

Peterson pitched two innings. The Metairie, La., native allowed one hit and a walk while contesting zero runs against the Hawks.

Nolen singled to center field to give the Majors early momentum in the second inning. The opportunity was stopped with a strikeout on the ensuing at bat.

Huntingdon responded in the bottom of the third inning to take a 1-0 lead after a single, steal and RBI single up the middle.

Vasquez would answer with a single through the left side, hoping to score for the Majors in the top of the fourth frame. The chance would be thwarted once more with a force out and a strikeout.

Millsaps would hold the Hawks to one hit and zero runs the remainder of the contest. However, Huntingdon maintained their lead to take down the Majors, 1-0 in Game Three.

The Majors will be back in action to host Agnes Scott College in a doubleheader, beginning at 4 p.m. in Jackson, Miss. on Thursday. Live video and live stats will be available at gomajors.com.
