JACKSON, Miss. — Millsaps women's soccer and senior goalkeeper
Emily Lozano put up a valiant effort in the team's season opener, but fell to McMurry University, 1-0 at Harper Davis Field on Saturday.
Lozano made 13 saves against 31 shots faced, while the Majors managed four shot attempts. McMurry's decisive goal came in the first half and their defense held strong.
The first half between the Majors and War Hawks saw the visitors controlling much of the offensive action. However, sophomore
Suzanna Busbee forced a McMurry save with a quick shot four minutes into the contest.
Millsaps goalkeeper Lozano was active, making several key saves, including stopping a shot from Alexis Lira early and another from Laila Brown in the 24th minute.
McMurry consistently pressured with corner kicks, totaling five in the half and finally broke through with a goal by Madison Black, assisted by Kaylee Worth, in the 32nd minute. Millsaps managed to hold off further scoring but ended the half trailing, 1-0.
The second half began with the War Hawks maintaining an aggressive offense, attempting a series of shots early on, with Brown's effort being saved by Lozano shortly after the restart. McMurry continued to apply pressure with multiple corner kicks and shots, including a notable save by Lozano off a shot from Alyssa Villarreal in the 55th minute.
The Majors managed to respond with their offensive efforts as senior
Haley James and junior
Mollie Spradley both took shots in the 53rd and 54th minutes, respectively. Throughout the half, Lozano proved essential for Millsaps, saving key shots and keeping McMurry from increasing their lead further.
A final pair of corners in the closing minutes saw freshman
Eliana Candebat record a shot attempt that went wide in a game-tying attempt. McMurry was able to close out the final five minutes with strong defensive pressure and secure the 1-0 decision.
The Majors will play the next five matches on the road, beginning with a matchup at Huntingdon College on Wednesday, Sept. 1. Opening kick is scheduled for 6 p.m. with live video and live stats available at gomajors.com.
