MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Millsaps women's soccer team secured a quality road win, triumphing 3-1 against Huntingdon College at the Samford Soccer Complex on Wednesday.
Junior
Alex Bremond had a terrific outing with a goal and pair of assists, while freshman
Lola Downer and sophomore
Suzanna Busbee both found the back of the net.
The Majors outshot the Hawks, 15-12 with an impressive 12-4 disparity of on-target attempts. Senior
Emily Lozano netted three saves to help keep Huntingdon at bay defensively.
Huntingdon started the match fast by recording the first five shot attempts. Millsaps maintained poise and soon grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the 36th minute.
Freshman
Eliana Candebat poked the ball free at midfield, creating a counter for Bremond. Bremond then booted the ball ahead down the middle of the field where Downer collected with her feet on a one-on-one chance. Out racing the lone defender, Downer chipped the ball from just outside the penalty box over the keeper's gloves and under the cross bar.
Millsaps extended its lead to 2-0 in the 39th minute before halftime following a deep offensive throw-in chance. Bremond collected the toss and drippled the ball around defenders in the box. She finished off the chance with a left-foot shot across her body that rolled slowly past the goalkeeper and just inside the right goalpost.
Busbee made it 3-0 after a pair of passes ahead left her alone just outside the box in the 61st minute. Bremond provided the final touch pass before Busbee chipped the ball in high with her right foot.
The Hawks soon answered after the restart with only four total touches in the 62nd minute. A home attacker found space just inside the box to volley a bouncing ball over Lozano's gloves and into the far-left side of the net.
Both teams traded chances in the closing half hour of action until the final whistle sealed the Millsaps victory. The Majors earned revenge after falling to the Hawks twice a season ago.
Millsaps will remain on the road for their next match and face LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas on Saturday. Start time is set for 6 p.m. with live video and live stats available at gomajors.com.
