Ellis Dykes' Late Strike Powers Men's Soccer Past ETBU, 1-0

Sophomore Scores in 84th Minute, Hamauei Nets Shutout on Thursday

MARSHALL, Texas — Late-match and stellar defensive heroics helped power the Millsaps men's soccer team to a thrilling, 1-0 road victory at East Texas Baptist University on Thursday. Sophomore Ellis Dykes scored in the 84th minute and senior Michael Hamauei added his fifth career shutout at Cornish Soccer Field.

The Majors' defense was tremendous yielding zero shots on goal. Offensively Millsaps held a 7-6 shot advantage with two reaching target in a great defensive battle.

Additionally, the visitors posted a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. Senior Sam Cagle posted two shot attempts, while junior Braden Walkers and Dykes both hit the net once.

Walters' try came early in the fifth minute, which was stopped on the low-right side of goal. The Majors only allowed two shot tries the rest of the first half.

The game remained scoreless well into the second frame until freshman Myles Walden helped provide the breakthrough. He used his speed to race down the left side of the offensive pitch and drove the ball into the box. The ball was knocked loose and Dykes was able to corral it with his left foot and make a move around the keeper and boot it home with his right toe. He and his teammates gathered in jubilation in the right corner to celebrate.

The Tigers had one final free kick try in the last minute, but the last chance went wide left. Hamauei booted the ball back to midfield, letting the clock expire and give the Majors a 1-0 triumph.

The Majors will remain on the road and face LeTourneau University, beginning at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. Live video and live stats will be available at gomajors.com.
