JACKSON, Miss. — The Millsaps women's basketball team secured a decisive 65-43 victory over Southern Athletic Association newcomer Southwestern University inside the Hangar Dome on Friday.
Millsaps (11-4, 2-2 SAA) established control early with a 15-4 lead in the first quarter and maintained their advantage throughout. Southwestern (10-5, 1-3 SAA) was dominated on the boards, facing a 49-34 rebounding disparity.
Senior Elyse Warren led the team with a double-double of 19 rebounds and 14 points.
Junior Bailey Johnson contributed significantly by scoring 17 points, hitting 5-of-7 from beyond the arc and 6-of-8 from the floor.
Classmate Garin Freeman added 12 points and excelled in distributing the ball with seven assists, while adding three steals.
Junior Tia Anderson posted nine points and grabbed seven rebounds, providing solid support on both ends of the court.
The game opened with Millsaps taking an early lead as Freeman scored a layup just 31 seconds into the quarter. Millsaps maintained control with Johnson hitting her first of five three-pointers at 6:17.
Sophomore Ashlyn Hafley added points sinking a three-pointer with two minutes remaining in the opening frame. The quarter concluded with another Johnson jumper with just three seconds left, giving Millsaps a 15-4 lead.
In the second quarter, Millsaps extended their lead with a strong performance, outscoring the Pirates 19-13.
Johnson added to the momentum with three successful three-pointers, further widening the gap.
Millsaps maintained control with effective teamwork, evidenced by Freeman's multiple assists. As the quarter concluded, Millsaps held a 34-17 lead.
Millsaps extended their advantage over Southwestern in the third quarter, finishing with a 51-28 advantage.
Millsaps maintained their lead throughout the fourth quarter to secure their 65-43 victory.
The Majors will return for its second of four-game home stand, hosting another SAA newcomer in Trinity University. The teams square off, beginning at 12 p.m. on Sunday. Live video and live stats will be available at gomajors.com.
