Men’s Soccer Finishes Weekend with Conference Splits in Tennessee

Blandon Nets Against Scots, Dykes’ Goal Leads Majors Past Tigers in Road Action

MARYVILLE & SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Millsaps College men's soccer team was challenged by Maryville College at the MC Soccer Complex, falling 6-1 Friday before rebounding to defeat Sewanee 1-0 Sunday at Puett Field.

After falling to Maryville (3-3-3, 1-1 SAA)  on Friday, the Millsaps men's soccer team (6-3-2, 1-1 SAA) bounced back with a 1-0 victory over Sewanee (6-3-2, 1-1 SAA) on Sunday to get their first conference win of the season. That victory also ended a long drought against Sewanee.

The Majors had not defeated the Tigers since November 2, 2019, when Millsaps earned a dramatic 2-1 double-overtime win in the 2019 Southern Athletic Association Men's Soccer Tournament, with goals from Gabriel Ryce and Austin Miller.

Match 1: Maryville 6, Millsaps 1

Sophomore Raul Blandon scored an unassisted goal and finished with two shots, including one on goal. Freshman Zachary Diamond recorded two shots and put one on goal. Sophomore Edward Steinwand played all 90 minutes in goal and made two saves against the Scots.

Millsaps answered Maryville's opening goal when Blandon scored at 16:19 to even the match at 1-1 and show the Scots what the Majors were made of.

The Majors applied pressure with corner kicks at 14:03 and 21:45, along with shots from junior Ellis Dykes and Diamond as they executed well on offense. However, Maryville scored twice later in the first half to send Millsaps into halftime trailing 3-1.

The Scots scored three times in the second half, and Millsaps finished on the short end of a 6-1 result. Millsaps generated a response shortly after the first of those goals with consecutive corner kicks and a senior Braden Walters shot saved in the 53rd minute as he looked to help the Majors find answers.

Match 2: Millsaps 1, Sewanee 0

Millsaps withstood seven Sewanee attacks from 66:02 to 75:55 without conceding, helping preserve the shutout in a game in which Sewanee held a 16-9 shot advantage.

Dykes supplied the Majors' only goal; Sewanee finished with a 16-9 shot advantage and put seven attempts on frame, but Steinwand made seven saves as Millsaps posted the shutout.

The Majors also put five of their nine shots on goal, with Dykes recording two of those attempts.

Dykes opened the scoring rampage for Millsaps at 15:40, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead in the first half. Millsaps added pressure with saved shots from Dykes and freshman Carson Dwyer, while Steinwand stopped a Sewanee attempt at 19:22.

Millsaps withstood three Sewanee shots and a corner kick over the final 10 minutes to reach halftime ahead 1-0.

After halftime, Millsaps kept Sewanee off the scoreboard, with Steinwand making six saves as the visitors protected the 1-0 result.

Millsaps also created chances through Diamond and freshman Dakota Vann, whose shots were saved, and added second-half corner kicks in the 60th, 76th, and 90th minutes. The half finished scoreless, leaving Millsaps with a 1-0 win.

The Majors will be back in action to face Oglethorpe University on Friday at home beginning at 7 p.m. with live video available at FloCollege.com, and live stats at gomajors.com.
