Football Overpowers Centre in Second Half to Claim 28-13 Triumph

Reed Jr. Tallies Two Scores, 263 Yards Offensively on Friday

 
JACKSON, Miss. — The Millsaps College football team tallied 28 unanswered points in the second half to take down Centre College, 28-13 at Harper Davis Field on Friday. 
 
Millsaps (4-1) outrushed the visiting Colonels by a wide 311-166 margin, while scoring three of four touchdowns with the ground attack. 
 
The Majors did not let the rescheduled game slow the offense or defensive. Millsaps moved the game from Saturday afternoon to Friday evening due to anticipated inclement weather from Hurricane Isaias. 
 
Freshman Carl Reed Jr. delivered a strong performance under the Friday night lights against the Colonels, completing 12 of 21 passes for 128 yards.   
 
The New Orleans, La., native also rushed for 135 yards while rushing for two touchdowns in his first collegiate start. 
 
Senior quarterback Quez Goss found the end zone on a throwing play while dishing out 48 longest yards through the air. 
 
Classmate Tameron Patterson bulldozed his way through the Colonels' defense with 131 rushing yards and one tally on the ground. 
 
Patterson currently leads the Southern Athletic Association in rushing with 556 yards, averaging 111.2 yards per game, and is a runner-up in the conference with five total rushing touchdowns on the season thus far. 
 
Junior Davis Dare recorded 102 receiving yards following 62 longest yarders while being targeted nine times tonight against the Colonels. 
 
Sophomore Cornelious Dates accumulated his first collegiate touchdown of his career tonight following 48 longest receiving yards. 
 
On special teams, junior Connor Babin booted five kicks for three touchbacks led by 279 kickoff yards in the air. 
 
Sophomore Jace Vasquez recorded six punts for 240 yards, with a long of 50 yards. 
 
Junior Cole Williams led the Majors defense with eight total tackles (seven solos, one assisted). 
 
Classmate Myles Johnson anchored the Majors' defense with five total tackles (four solo, one assisted) in tonight's triumph. He also disrupted the Colonels' offense with 1.5 tackles for loss. 
 
Graduate student Zabian Boutan propelled past Centre where he tied second on the team against his conference opponents with five total tackles (four solo tackles, one assisted). 
 
The Baton Rouge, La., native recorded 3.0 sacks, forced two fumbles and recovered one fumble.

Centre (1-4) opened the scoring on the game's first possession, but failed a two-point try keeping it a 6-0 contest. 
 
The Colonels extended their advantage to 13-0 in the closing minutes of the first half off a 5-yard rushing tally. 
 
Millsaps adjusted and answered in dynamic fashion with four touchdowns after intermission. 
 
Goss found Dates on a 48-yard yard passing strike down the left sideline on the opening possession of the second half. Babin sailed in his first of four PATs to put the Majors on board, down 13-7. 

Centre held on to the same lead entering the final quarter before the Majors took the lead and control on the first plays of the fourth. Reed Jr. found an opening up the right side from five yards out with his feet, tying the game. Babin pushed the Majors in front. 

Millsaps continued to stretch their scoring opportunities with Patterson escaping past the Colonels defense on a three-yard run to push further ahead of the visitors, 21-13.Boutan made a statement with a sack on third down to put a close on the next Centre drive.

Reed Jr. soon put the game out of reach with a 13-yard rushing tally to put the Majors out front, 28-13 after the successful PAT. Boutan put his final stamp on the game with a sack fumble and recovery on Centre's last offensive snap. 
 
The Majors will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 17 to face Sewanee in Sewanee, Tenn., with a 1 p.m. kickoff Live video will be provided at FloCollege.com, while live stats will be available at gomajors.com.
