ATLANTA — The Millsaps men's basketball team was unable to close out strong against Oglethorpe University, falling 74-66 late in the second half on Sunday inside the Dorough Fieldhouse.
Millsaps (11-8, 2-6 SAA) bench contributed heavily by adding 43 points while Oglethorpe (6-13, 3-5 SAA) secured the win with 34 points in the paint and 22 points off turnovers.
Junior
Davion James posted 14 points, including three 3-pointers, and collected six rebounds.
Classmate
Cameron Lumar added 12 points with four 3-pointers and tallied three steals.
Senior
Caleb Kent scored 11 points and recorded four rebounds. Junior
Rodney Phillips Jr. finished with seven points and led the team with 14 rebounds.
The game opened with Oglethorpe taking an early lead on a three-pointer at 19:34.
The Majors responded with a strong inside presence, highlighted by Phillips Jr.'s tip-in layup to put Millsaps ahead.
James extended Millsaps' lead to 20–10 with a three-pointer at 10:10, showcasing his perimeter shooting strength.
Oglethorpe fought back to tie the game at 27 with a series of free throws with 1:29 minutes to go.
However, Millsaps regained the edge by three margins when freshman
Luke LeFors drained a crucial three-pointer at 1:19, assisted by Lumar.
The half concluded with junior
David Combest Jr. securing a free throw, providing Millsaps with a 31–29 advantage to end the first half.
Millsaps rallied midway through the second half with a series of strong plays, highlighted by Kent's layup at 13:23, cutting the deficit to two points.
Lumar continued the momentum with back-to-back 3-pointers, equalizing the score at 55-55.
However, Oglethorpe responded quickly, with a layup to take back their lead by two tallies, 57-55.
After a well-rounded effort, Millsaps faced challenges as the half progressed, with missed opportunities allowing Oglethorpe to maintain an advantage. Millsaps concluded the game trailing 74-66, as Oglethorpe secured the victory.
