GEORGETOWN, Texas — The Millsaps men's basketball team defeated Southwestern University for the second time on the season following a 72-69 triumph on Friday inside the Corbin J. Robertson Center.
Millsaps (12-8, 3-6 SAA) secured the win with a strong presence in the paint, scoring 40 points inside, and capitalizing on their 51 total rebounds to maintain a slight edge.
Southwestern University (10-11, 4-6 SAA) kept the game close with seven 3-pointers and a resilient second half, but the Majors held firm to clinch the victory.
Senior Caleb Kent scored 14 points on 7-for-11 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds. Junior Davion James contributed nine points, while recording three steals and three assists.
Junior David Combest Jr. added 14 points, converting 6 of 8 free throws, and matching Kent with eight rebounds.
Classmate Jaxon Toney tallied 12 points, making 4 of 5 field goals and 4 of 6 from the free-throw line.
Millsaps opened the first half with a strong offensive display, quickly answering Southwestern's initial basket with a layup from Colt Donley at 19:07.
The half featured seven ties and 11 lead changes, but Millsaps gained momentum with a fast-break 3-pointer by Cameron Lumar at 15:47, assisted by James, to take a narrow lead.
As the first half progressed, the Majors found success in the paint, scoring 18 points, and capitalizing on fast-break opportunities, adding 10 points in transition.
Toney contributed significantly off the bench, scoring from both the field and free throw line to increase the lead. Millsaps concluded the first half leading 38–31.
Millsaps began the second half with a strong start, quickly extending their lead with layups from Combest Jr. and junior Colt Donley, reaching a 42–31 advantage.
Despite a response from Southwestern, the Majors maintained their edge through key layups and free throws by Combest Jr. and Toney, securing a narrow 71–69 lead with crucial plays in the final minutes.
Millsaps concluded the game with a defensive rebound by Lumar, sealing a 72–69 victory in a tight contest.
