Effective Shooting Leads Women’s Basketball Past Oglethorpe, 94-79 on Sunday

Garin Freeman Records Career-High 28 Points in Impressive Win over Stormy Petrels

ATLANTA — The Millsaps women's basketball team defeated Oglethorpe University, 94-79 in conference play on Sunday inside the Dorough Field House.

Senior Elyse Warren tied the conference career rebounding record against the Stormy Petrels in today's matchup, her next rebound will set the official record against Southwestern University on Friday.

Millsaps (13-6, 4-4 SAA) led Oglethorpe (12-7, 4-4 SAA) with a 44-point performance inside the paint while securing the victory with effective free-throw shooting, converting 25 of 34 attempts. 

Junior Garin Freeman took over the court with a career-high 28 points, while converting 9-of -14 field goals and making 8-of -12 of her free throws, The Little Rock, Ark., native also dished out five assists to her teammates.

Warren collected 17 rebounds and added 16 points to her game in a tremendous double-double performance.

Junior Tia Anderson posted 21 points, accumulated nine rebounds, shot 3-of-6 from beyond the arc, and recorded two blocks to go along with her accolades. 

Sophomore Anaya Lewis contributed 10 points and nine rebounds, with a perfect 4-of-4 4 from the free-throw line. 

Playing well on the season, Junior Bailey Johnson also recorded 10 points while adding three assists in a dominant game over the Stormy Petrels. 

Millsaps opened the game with an early 3-pointer by Johnson at 7:36, assisted by Freeman, establishing their presence on the court. 

Shortly afterward, Freeman put the Majors ahead, 5-2, by sinking two free throws.   

Oglethorpe established a 9-5 lead after a decisive 7-0 scoring run that helped the host regain momentum.  

Both teams continued trading points back and forth, with the Stormy Petrels closing the first half on top, 20-18. 

In the second quarter, Johnson scored another three-pointer from the bottom of the net, giving the Majors a 21-20 lead.   

In a closely contested matchup, Freeman bested the Stormy Petrels with her first three-pointer of the game, maintaining the Majors' momentum with 7:47 remaining before halftime.  

However, with 1:23 remaining, Warren's layup put the Majors ahead by 11 points, 45-34. 

Freeman's turnaround jump shot inside the paint gave the Majors their final points before halftime, as they powered past the Stormy Petrels, 47-38.   

Millsaps extended their lead in the third quarter by outshooting Oglethorpe with a 56 percent field goal rate, including two 3-pointers, while holding the home team to 31 percent from the field.  

The visitors capitalized on turnovers, converting Oglethorpe's three giveaways into five points and outscoring them 12-4 in the paint. 

The Majors also benefited from the bench, contributing seven points. By the end of the third quarter, Millsaps led 73-53. 

Freeman remained unstoppable in the third quarter; her lethal three-point shooting pushed the Majors forward by 14 points at 8:59 on the clock.   

Millsaps continued to dominate in all aspects, moving ahead by 18 points, 58-40, with Johnson scoring a jumper.  

Keeping the fire going inside the Dorough Field House. Anderson saw a nifty layup to blank the Stormy Petrels by 25 points with 3:29 minutes of the third quarter. 

Continuing the competition, Maw closed out the third quarter by making a pair of free throws to keep the Majors fired up at 73-53.  

Millsaps maintained dominance over the Stormy Petrels throughout the fourth quarter, demonstrating strength in both offensive and defensive play, outplaying Oglethorpe, 94-79 on Sunday.
