SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The Millsaps men's basketball team fought until the final minutes on the court, but fell short to Trinity University, 79-64 inside the Bell Center on Sunday.
Millsaps (12-9, 3-7 SAA) displayed a strong rebounding effort with 40 total boards, including 17 offensives, the Majors were unable to overcome a 15-point deficit. Trinity (17-5, 9-2 SAA capitalized with 28 points off turnovers to secure the win.
Senior Caleb Kent scored 16 points, making six of ten field goal attempts and adding two steals.
Junior Davion James contributed 10 points, converting two 3-pointers and collecting two steals
Senior Dakota Gasca recorded three steals and added three points. Junior Jaxon Toney gathered eight rebounds and scored eight points, successfully converting all four free throws.
Millsaps initiated the game with a strong start, as James connected on a 3-pointer at 18:41, giving them an early edge.
Junior Cameron Lumar's steal and subsequent 3-pointer at 17:28, assisted by classmate Rodney Phillips Jr., helped maintain their lead in a back-and-forth first half.
Facing consistent scoring, the Majors faced resistance as the Tigers tied the game multiple times.
Kent's jumper at 10:03 briefly restored their lead, but Trinity responded with a run that placed them ahead late in the half.
Freshman Luke LeFors' layup at 1:37 brought Millsaps within striking distance, but the half concluded with them trailing 39–35.
The Majors started the second half with a strong defensive presence, highlighted by seven steals.
Phillips Jr. scored a layup at 17:48, assisted by Lumar, which kept the visitors within striking distance.
However, as the half progressed, the Tigers capitalized on fast breaks and second-chance opportunities to extend their lead.
Despite Kent's late surge with a tip-in and free throw combination at 0:42, Millsaps trailed 79–64 at the end of the half. The game concluded with Trinity securing a 79–64 victory over the Majors.
