Softball Splits Doubleheader against LeTourneau

Majors Blanked 10-2 in Game One, Tops YellowJackets, 4-2 in Game Two

LONGVIEW, Texas — The Millsaps softball team played a doubleheader against LeTourneau University on Tuesday. After losing the first game 10-2, the Majors bettered their performance in the second game, securing a 4-2 win against the YellowJackets at the LETU Softball Field.

Game 1: LeTourneau 10, Millsaps 2

Sophomore Caroline Mathis went 2-for-3 at the plate while recording one RBI and a stolen base.

Junior Kadence Cannon contributed to the Majors batting 2-for-2 while adding one run.

Classmate Allana Vasquez took the circle for Millsaps, pitching 2.0 innings with four strikeouts against the YellowJackets.

In the first game, Millsaps managed eight hits and scored twice in the second inning but was unable to overcome LeTourneau's 15-hit performance.

The Majors took an early, 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning with two runs. Freshman Liza Gregg singled through the left side, followed by a single from Cannon to get their day started.

Sophomore Ava Palumbo then delivered an RBI single down the right-field line, allowing Gregg to score.

Moments afterwards, Mathis singled to center field, bringing in Cannon for the second run.

However, LeTourneau responded with four runs at the bottom of the second, taking advantage of a throwing error and key hits, to take their first lead of the matchup, 4-2 to sting the Majors.

Millsaps' third inning saw sophomore Brynn Arena reach third base, but they could not bring her home.

LeTourneau extended its lead with three more runs, making it 7-2 their way by the end of the third inning.

The fourth inning saw no scoring from either team, as Millsaps stranded two runners on base.

LeTourneau secured the victory with three additional runs in the fifth inning, including an RBI single to take down the Majors, 10-2 in Game One.

Game 2: Millsaps 4, LeTourneau 2

In the second game, the Majors bounced back with a 4-2 win over the YellowJackets.

Sophomore Hailey Peterson pitched 5.2 innings, allowing one earned run and striking out three batters to become the winning pitcher.

Junior Julie Amacher started for Millsaps in the second game, pitching 1.1 innings, allowing two hits and one earned run while issuing three walks.

Mathis made a huge difference for the Majors in Game Two, the Prairieville, La., native batted 3-for-4 while registering a hit.

Senior Julia Strain went 2-for-3 in batting while scoring one run and added two RBIs. Arena collected one hit, a double, and drew two walks.

Millsaps got into their groove in the fourth inning, putting up all four of their runs. Vasquez started with a single, and then Cannon reached base on a walk.

Freshman Hadley Brunet, came into the contest as a pinch runner for Vasquez, moved forward on a wild pitch, which set up Strain's single to left field that brought in two runs.

Mathis delivered an RBI single, scoring Palumbo and Strain, putting Millsaps ahead 4-1.

LeTourneau added a run in their half scoring on a groundout, closing the fourth inning at 4-2 in favor of Millsaps.

The Majors held onto their two-run advantage by delivering strong pitching and solid defense, preventing the home team from scoring again and securing a 4-2 victory over the YellowJackets in a tightly contested second game.

The Majors will be back in action on Thursday to face Hendrix College in Conway, Ark., beginning with a 5 p.m doubleheader. Live video and live stats will be provided at gomajors.com.
