BATESVILLE, Ark. — The Millsaps softball team had a successful outing against Lyon College on Saturday, first securing a decisive 7-0 victory, followed by a 7-2 win in the second game of the day at the Howard and Mary House Field.
The Majors boasted a total of 19 hits across both contests, highlighting their offensive prowess and effective pitching.
Game 1: Millsaps 7, Lyon 0
Junior Julie Amacher handled the Scots well inside the circle pitching 4.0 innings without allowing an earned run.
The Chelsea, Ala., native faced 14 batters, giving up only three hits while striking out five and issuing no walks.
Amacher's efficient pitching was highlighted by throwing 46 strikes out of 63 pitches, contributing to a WHIP of 0.75, and securing her third win of the season with a 3-1 record.
Sophomore Brynn Arena recorded two runs and a home run, while junior Allana Vasquez added two hits, both doubles, driving in two runs.
Sophomore Caroline Mathis contributed with two hits and one RBI, delivering four assists at third base.
Junior Kadence Cannon recorded two hits, drove in two runs, and stole two bases in Game One.
In the first inning, junior Ella Morgan Sears singled to the left side, followed by Vasquez doubling to left field, that allowed two runners to score, giving the Majors an early 2-0 lead.
Freshman Liza Gregg reached first base on an error by the Scots' shortstop, allowing Vasquez to score and extending her team's lead to 3–0 over the Scots in the noon game.
In the third inning, Millsaps kept up their strong performance as Cannon hit a single to the Scots' shortstop, which enabled Vasquez to advance around the bases once more, increasing their team's lead to 4-0.
Senior Julia Strain recorded a walk, and sophomore Hailey Peterson extended the Majors' lead to 5-0 by scoring on a passed ball. Arena blasted a home run in the top of the fourth inning, extending the Majors' lead to 6–0 while her teammates cheered her on.
Millsaps expanded their lead to 7-0 in the fifth inning, with Gregg crossing home plate after Mathis hit a single to continue the teams momentum.
The Majors held their lead for the rest of Game One, securing a victory over the Scots after Peterson stuck out the final batter.
Game 2: Millsaps 7, Lyon 2
Vasquez pitched impressively, recording three strikeouts in 2 innings without allowing a hit or a walk, contributing to a WHIP of .00.
Coming off an impressive win against Hendrix College on Thursday, sophomore Hailey Marange pitched 5.0 innings, where she struck out two batters and only allowed two runs.
Gregg recorded two runs and two RBIs, highlighted by her home run that contributed to her impressive 2.500 OPS.
Sophomore Hannah Briscoe tallied three RBIs on two hits, including a double during a base-loaded situation.
In the second game, Millsaps continued their offensive momentum from Game One, starting with a run in the second inning when Gregg reached on an error and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Marange.
The Majors exploded for four runs in the third inning, beginning with Sears' single and stolen base, followed by Arena's single. Gregg's sacrifice fly brought home Arena, and Briscoe's double drove in three more runs, giving Millsaps a commanding 5-1 lead.
The fifth inning saw the Majors add another run when Peterson scored on a fielder's choice, increasing their lead to 6-2. In the seventh inning, Gregg hit a solo home run, cementing the victory with a final score of 7-2 for the Majors.
