Baseball Takes Down Centenary, 3-2 on St. Patrick's Day

Majors Deploy Nine Pitchers to Strikeout Gents

JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps baseball team claimed a 3-2 triumph over Centenary College, while repping lucky green hats on Tuesday at Twenty Field.

Junior Wesley Grant went a perfect 3-for-3 batting against the Gents while recording one RBI, a sacrifice fly and a stolen base.

Freshman Thomas Temple boasted two hits and a pair of RBIs in a non-conference matchup against Centenary (9-13). Senior EJ Ousley also added a two hits.

On the mound, Millsaps combined for nine pitchers preparing for the conference opening series against Trinity University, beginning on Friday.

Freshman Jackson Devey pitched 1.0 innings, while recording two strikeouts.

Classmate Dylon Lozano became the winning pitcher tonight after pitching 1.1 innings, allowing zero hits and no runs to secure his first collegiate win.

Senior Andrew Bradley received the save on the night after pitching the ninth inning, while boasting zero hits against and holding the Gents scoreless.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Millsaps scored their first run of the game after Temple recorded a single to Centenary's shortstop, bringing senior Mason Morgan home with the bases loaded.

In the sixth inning, Centenary would make a pitching change on the mound after sophomore Wes Carr reached first base on an error and second on the throw.

After Carr later reached third off a wild pitch, Millsaps continued to bring down the Gents with a sacrifice fly by Grant to right field, sending Carr to the final base, extending the lead to 2-0.

In the top of the seventh inning, Centenary finally responded against the Majors with a pair of singles and a walk to bring a runner home, trailing 2-1.

Moments later the Gents made a comeback to tie the game at 2-2 after a baserunner touched home plate following a groundout to third with the bases loaded.

The Majors put away the inning with a final groundout to keep the Gents from taking their first lead.

Looking to advance the Majors' lead, freshman Christian Kretzer singled to the right side, advanced to second on a balk, and furthered his progress with a stolen base in the bottom of the seventh inning. However, the Gents utilized a trio of strikeouts in the inning to keep the game even.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Millsaps extended their margin back ahead to 3-2 after Carr walked, Grant singled and sophomore Kyle Veal Jr. was intentionally walked to put Majors on every base.

Temple stepped in and hit the ball to the Centenary shortstop, who made an out at second base for the second out. However, Temple legged out a fielder's choice by outrunning a would-be double play, scoring Carr from third for the lead.

Bradley wrapped up the final inning for the Majors on the mound, with a runner on second and one out.

He recovered well, forcing a fly out and game-ending groundout to help take down the Gents on Tuesday.

The Majors will next start their conference play on Friday against Trinity University with a doubleheader in San Antonio, Texas, beginning at 5 p.m. Live video and live stats will be provided at gomajors.com.
