JACKSON, Miss — The Millsaps College (17-5, 3-0 SAA) softball team had a successful weekend securing victories over Centre College (7-8, 0-3 SAA) for a three-game sweep to open conference play.
The Majors delivered standout performances across the board, highlighted by a 13-0 win, a 4-0 no-hitter, and a 3-1 comeback victory at the Millsaps College Softball Complex.
Game 1: Millsaps 13, Centre 0 (5 Inn.)
In Game One, Millsaps tallied 12 RBIs, 10 hits, and 13 runs as a team against the Centre College to open conference play.
Sophomore
Hailey Marange (8-1) pitched 4.0 innings without allowing a run, earning the win, and striking out two batters.
Junior
Julie Amacher provided relief, pitching 1.0 inning and allowing two hits, but managed to keep Centre scoreless.
Sophomore
Brynn Arena went 2-for-2, including a double, collected two RBIs while also stealing a base. She was also hit by a pitch and scored a run.
Senior
Julia Strain hit a home run, drove in four runs and was hit by a pitch, while freshman
Liza Gregg added two hits, one RBI, and scored twice. Junior
Kadence Cannon finished with two hits, two runs, two RBIs, and a stolen base.
In the bottom of the second inning, Millsaps opened conference play in impressive fashion, recording five hits and scoring five runs.
Junior
Allana Vasquez ignited the scoring with a leadoff single through the left side, reaching first base and setting the tone as the Majors gained the confidence they needed to take control of the day.
Sophomore
Hailey Peterson followed with another single to left, putting two runners on. Gregg then delivered a hit up the middle, and an error by Centre's center fielder allowed the play to extend.
Vasquez advanced to third and later came around to score, giving the Majors their first lead of the conference opener.
Leading 1-0 in the inning, Cannon singled off a bunt to score Peterson to give the Majors another run.
Cannon quickly stole second base after, then Strain stepped up to the plate and blasted a three-run homer to left field, pushing the Majors ahead of the Colonels, 5-0.
In the bottom of the third inning, Millsaps kept their bats hot by netting eight runs off five hits. Arena led things off with a double to center field.
Vasquez drew a walk and later stole second, while Arena advanced to third with a steal as well.
Gregg later singled to center field to send Arena home to score to keep their strong performance ahead, leading 6-0.
Cannon kept the Majors' offense rolling with a single to right center field, driving in freshman
Klaire Purewal from third and extending Millsaps' lead to 7-0.
The momentum for the Majors continued to build as Strain was hit by a pitch, and Peterson came around to score another run.
Millsaps added four consecutive runs after Strain was hit by a pitch to plate Peterson, and Gregg came home on a walk by sophomore
Ava Palumbo.
Sophomore
Caroline Mathis followed with a single to center field, driving in Cannon and helping the Majors extend their advantage over the Colonels to 10-0 as they looked unstoppable.
Arena later singled through the left side and advanced to second on the throw, allowing Mathis and Palumbo to score, driving the Majors further apart from the Colonels, 12-0.
After a sequence of heavy hits by the Majors, Vasquez grounded out to the Colonel's shortstop allowing junior
Ella Morgan Sears to record the last score of the inning, boosting the margin to 13-0 as Centre remained scoreless.
The Majors closed out the fourth and fifth innings scoreless to put the run-rule into play.
Game 2: Millsaps 4, Centre 0
Vasquez delivered a standout performance inside the circle for Millsaps, pitching a complete-game shutout against Centre in Game Two on Saturday.
She struck out three batters, and only base runner allowed resulted from a walk with one out in the seventh inning.
Her efficiency on Saturday was evident, as 63 of her 97 pitches were strikes, playing a key role in the team's success against the Colonels.
This game marked her fourth victory of the season, further solidifying her as a reliable starter for the team. Offensively she added a hit and scored a run.
Peterson contributed with one hit and an RBI. Palumbo added to the scoring, collecting one hit and one RBI with the bases loaded. Arena displayed patience on the plate, tallying two walks and scoring a run.
In the second game, Millsaps capitalized on Centre's three errors and recorded three hits to score all four of its runs in the fourth inning.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Arena walked and advanced to second on a single by Vasquez. Peterson then singled up the middle, driving in Arena for the first run.
Vasquez later scored on an error, allowing Peterson, Gregg, Cannon to keep the bases loaded as Millsaps moved ahead, 2-0.
Moments later Palumbo smashed the softball up the middle to bring in Gregg to score on an unearned run, making it 3-0.
After Palumbo's solid hit, Cannon scored on an error that was forced by Sears' bat, extending Millsaps lead to 4-0.
Vasquez finished the rest of Game Two inside the circle, allowing zero runs and no hits. She struck out the final batter after a 10-pitch battle.
Game 3: Millsaps 3, Centre 1
Looking to take a three-game sweep against the Colonels on Sunday, Sears led the Majors' offensive threat, batting 2-for-4, with a three-run homer and a double.
Arena recorded a hit, stole a base and walked. Mathis registered two hits and scored once, showcasing her ability to reach base effectively.
Palumbo also added two hits and crossed the plate for one run, enhancing the team's performance.
Amacher delivered 5.0 innings of scoreless pitching, allowing only one hit, one walk, and striking out three, maintaining control over the opposition.
The Chelsea, Ala., product faced 17 batters, keeping the Colonels off the scoreboard with 81 pitches, 52 of which were strikes.
Peterson became the winning pitcher in Game Three, where she pitched the final two innings, allowing one hit, one walk, and a run while facing seven batters.
Centre took the lead in the sixth inning following a groundout with one out.
However, Millsaps made a decisive comeback in the seventh inning. Palumbo singled and advanced to second on an erroneous throw.
Mathis then singled, moving Palumbo to third. After meeting in the circle by Centre, Sears hammered the first to right center for a 3-run walk-off homer to seal the deal for the Majors.
Millsaps secured the victory with a final score of 3-1 to close out strong on Sunday against Centre.
The Majors will be back in action on Saturday, facing No. 5 Berry College in a conference doubleheader in Mount Berry, Ga., beginning at 12 p.m. CT Live video and live stats will be provided at gomajors.com.
