Softball Stopped by No. 9 Berry in Game Three on Sunday

Majors Fall, 5-2 against Vikings to Close Out Weekend

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. — The Millsaps College softball team delivered a solid effort against Berry College but fell 5–2 in Game Three of the conference matchup on Sunday at Kay Williams Field.

Millsaps (17-8, 3-3 SAA) managed seven hits, with two doubles contributing to its scoring efforts.

Berry (19-5, 4-2 SAA) capitalized with a three-run in the first inning and later secured the victory in the seventh frame.

Sophomore Hailey Peterson pitched a complete game, going 6.0 innings while allowing no earned runs on seven hits.

She faced 30 batters, striking out three and walking three, with 89 pitches thrown, 58 of which were strikes.

Peterson tallied two hits and drove in a pair of runs, highlighted by a double against the Vikings.

Sophomore Kodi Jimmie notched a double and drew a walk, finishing with a 1.667 on-base percentage.

Junior Kadence Cannon added a hit and a walk, supporting the defense with six assists from shortstop.

In the bottom of the first inning, Berry took a 3-0 lead following three runs and two hits to strike the Majors early on Sunday.

Millsaps had their way, recording consecutive groundouts by Cannon and sophomore Caroline Mathis in the bottom of the second inning.

Moments later, a Berry batter reached first on a fielder's choice, but Cannon made an unassisted out on a runner as Millsaps continued to produce key defensive plays.

In the top of the third, Mathis and junior Ella Morgan Sears delivered back-to-back hits for the Majors, sparking the Majors offensive tempo.

In the fourth inning, Jimmie recorded a leadoff double to left field, and freshman Hadley Brunet pinch-ran for Jimmie and moved to third after sophomore Kirsten Gilchrist grounded out to the Vikings pitcher.

The Majors got on the board later in the inning when Peterson doubled to left-center, driving in Brunet and cutting the deficit to 3–1.

In the bottom of the fourth, Berry drove in two more runs to extend their lead over the Majors.

In the top of the sixth inning, Peterson stayed focused as a single from the Metairie, La., native brought Gilchrist home, narrowing their deficit to 5–2.

Shortly after the Majors scored, Peterson stole second base, only for the Vikings' shortstop to end the inning with an unassisted play after a strong showcase by Peterson.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Majors recorded three groundout plays by Cannon and Mathis to stiff the Vikings' offensive effort.

Berry stayed in control for the rest of the game to take down the Majors, 5-2 on Sunday.
