Alma Uses Big Fifth Inning to Down Baseball, 7-3

Carston Williams, Mason Morgan Each Tally Pair of Hits in Defeat on Thursday

JACKSON, Miss. — The Millsaps College baseball program fought tough against Alma College, but ultimately fell 7-3 at Twenty Field on Thursday.

Alma (6-2-1) utilized a six-run, fifth inning to pull away. Millsaps (6-6) saw one of the game's runs against count as earned. Dylon Lozano, Andrew Bradley, Kyler Roberts, Weston Myers, and Christos Panagopoulos pitched well.

Sophomore Carston Williams and senior Mason Morgan both tallied two hits. Williams posted a pair of doubles, while Morgan also recorded an RBI, double, run scored, and was hit by a pitch.

After walking the first batter, Lozano got into a groove early by striking out the next three batters.

Alma did break through for a run in the top of second inning after the first batter was hit by a pitch and promptly stole second. With two outs, the Scots singled through the left side to go up 1-0.

The Scots were hit by a pitch with one out in the third inning, but were immediately stopped after a line out to second baseman Williams and throw back to first base.

Millsaps tied the game in the bottom of the third after Temple walked and rushed to third after senior EJ Ousley singled up the middle. Temple soon scored after a perfectly executed double steal play, with Ousley gathering the defense's attention and allowing Temple to slide under the throw back from the middle infield to home.

Alma soon retaliated with six unearned runs in the fifth to capture a 7-1 advantage.

Morgan followed with a leadoff double and reached third on fly out to center field. Ousley was able to reach on an error with two outs, bringing Morgan home to score.

No scoring occurred until the ninth inning, when senior Layne Cross doubled to right field with one out. Morgan then stepped in and singled through the left side to bring around the sprinting Cross.

The Majors would advance a pinch runner to third after a failed pickoff attempt and ground out. However, Alma recorded the final out to secure the 7-3 decision.

The Majors will next travel to Montgomery, Ala. for a pair of games at the Huntingdon Firehouse Classic on Saturday. Millsaps first faces Edgewood University at 11 a.m. before taking on host Huntingdon at 6 p.m. Live video and live stats will be provided at gomajors.com.
