SEWANEE, Tenn. — The Millsaps College softball team put in a great effort, sweeping Sewanee in Tennessee on Saturday and Sunday. The Majors bettered the Tigers by counts of 9-2 and 4-0 on Saturday before taking Game Three, 11-2 in six innings to close the weekend at Tiger Softball Field.
Millsaps (20-9, 6-3 SAA) moves into a tie for first place atop of Southern Athletic Association (SAA) with a 6-3 conference record.
Game One: Millsaps 9, Sewanee 2
Junior Ella Morgan Sears contributed significantly by stealing two bases and hitting a double to help the Majors surpass the Tigers in Game One on Saturday.
Classmate Allana Vasquez provided offensive strength to her batting with two hits, including a double, and scored twice to tame her opponents.
Freshman Liza Gregg led the Majors hitting efforts with three hits and four RBIs.
Sophomore Hailey Marange pitched a complete game, allowing only one earned run over seven innings of action inside the circle.
She threw for a total of 67 pitches allowing only three hits while striking out one batter and issuing no walks.
The Madisonville, La., native effort inside the circle contributed to her ninth win of the season, solidifying her record at 9-3.
Millsaps secured a decisive 9-2 victory over Sewanee. In the second inning, Vasquez doubled to left center and scored on a single by sophomore Kodi Jimmie.
Classmate Hailey Peterson and junior Kadence Cannon both scored on a double by Gregg, putting the visitors ahead 3-0. After two innings, the score was 3-0.
In the third inning, Vasquez scored on a fielder's choice, Jimmie scored on a single by Gregg. Moments later sophomore Ava Palumbo walked to bring Peterson home to top the Tigers, 6-0.
Millsaps capitalized on walks to load the bases, as Cannon also scored on a walk for the Majors to extend their lead, 7-0 by the end of the third inning.
Sewanee (12-22, 1-11 SAA) responded in the fourth inning, with two runs on a sacrifice fly and a ground out, narrowing the gap to 7-2.
Millsaps added two more runs in the sixth inning. Sears doubled and scored on a single by Vasquez. Later, a walk to Gregg brought in another run, making it 9-2 after six innings.
Millsaps held Sewanee scoreless in the seventh inning, securing the victory with a final score of 9-2.
Game Two: Millsaps 4, Sewanee 0
Vasquez delivered a standout performance, throwing a complete game of 7.0 innings while allowing just two hits and one walk and striking out seven batters.
Mathis was effective in Game Two stealing a pair of bases and scoring one run.
Cannon contributed significantly at the plate with two RBIs. Peterson added momentum to the offense with a double and one RBI against the Tigers.
In the first inning, Mathis singled to left field and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Sears reached first on an error, allowing Mathis to score.
Sears then stole second and later scored on a double by Peterson, giving Millsaps a 2-0 lead at the end of the inning.
The third inning saw further action as sophomore Brynn Arena walked and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Jimmie walked and eventually scored alongside Arena on a single by Cannon, extending Millsaps' lead to 4-0.
Throughout the remainder of the game, Millsaps maintained its lead, supported by Vasquez's pitching, which allowed only two hits and secured seven strikeouts.
Millsaps dominate performance left the Tigers scoreless on Saturday to secure the triumph.
Game Three: Millsaps 11, Sewanee 2 (6 inn.)
Junior Julie Amacher pitched 4.0 innings for Millsaps, allowing three hits and two earned runs. She struck out one batter and issued two walks to become the winner inside the circle.
Amacher threw 86 pitches, with 60 of them being strikes, and improved her season record to 4-1 with the performance.
Gregg led the team with a home run, driving in three runs while collecting two hits.
Cannon a key veteran, contributed to the Majors by scoring two runs and adding two hits in the game.
Mathis crossed the plate twice and secured a hit while also drawing a walk.
Peterson recorded a hit, scored twice, and pitched 2.0 innings, allowing two hits and striking out one while playing well on both sides of the ball.
Millsaps defeated Sewanee 11-2 in a game marked by strong offensive performances and solid defense.
The first inning saw the Majors take an early lead with four runs. Mathis singled and advanced to third on an error, setting up Sears, who also reached base on an error.
Both scored on a fielding error, and Arena later scored on a single by Jimmie. Millsaps led 4-0 after the first inning.
In the third inning, Millsaps added three more runs. Cannon scored on a single by Palumbo, and Gregg scored on a fielder's choice.
Mathis also crossed the plate on a hit by a pitch, extending the lead to 7-2 at the end of the inning to disrupt the Tigers.
In the fourth inning Millsaps on a Sewanee error. Peterson singled and scored when Liza Gregg reached on a throwing error, increasing the lead to 8-2.
Millsaps delivered the final blow in the sixth inning with three runs. After walks and an error set the stage.
Gregg hit a three-run homer to left center sealing the deal to roll the Majors past the Tigers, 11-2.
The Majors will be back in action on Saturday to face Rhodes College in a doubleheader, beginning at 1 p.m., with the Beacon Award presentation to take place pregame. Senior Day will then take place on Sunday before the 12 p.m. finale. Live video and live stats will be provided at gomajors.com.
