ATLANTA — The Millsaps College baseball team (11-15, 3-5 SAA) faced Oglethorpe University (14-11, 5-3 SAA) in a doubleheader on Friday at Hermance Stadium, resulting in a split as the Majors lost the first game 6-4, but bounced back to secure an 11-6 victory in the second game.
Game One: Oglethorpe 6, Millsaps 4
Junior
Wesley Grant contributed significantly with two RBIs and a double, while freshman
Hudson Moberly crossed home plate twice with two hits. Senior
Layne Cross also recorded two hits, including a double, and scored once.
In the opening game, senior
Andrew Bradley provided solid relief, pitching 3.2 innings, conceding just one run on one hit, while striking out two and walking one.
In the first game, despite the loss, Millsaps showcased a strong performance with 10 hits and two double plays. The Majors took an early lead in the second inning when Moberly singled, followed by sophomore
Kyle Veal Jr., who also connected for a single. Senior
Sam Thomas then delivered an RBI single to score Moberly, putting Millsaps ahead 1-0
Millsaps added another run in the third inning after senior
EJ Ousley reached on an error, which set the stage for sophomore
Wes Carr's RBI single, extending the lead to 2-0. However, Oglethorpe responded in the bottom half of the third with a two-RBI single, tying the game at 2-2.
Oglethorpe took control in the fourth inning with a two-run homer, followed by a sacrifice fly later on, extending their lead to 5-2.
Millsaps narrowed the gap in the sixth inning as Moberly singled and Cross doubled, leading to a Grant double that brought both runners home, making it 5-4. Oglethorpe added an insurance run in the eighth with an RBI single, concluding the game at 6-4.
Game Two: Millsaps 11, Oglethorpe 6
In the second game, Millsaps turned the tide, hitting three home runs on their way to an 11-6 victory.
Sophomore
Cam Cressend pitched 5.0 innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits, with two strikeouts and three walks. Classmate
Fred Fields contributed 4.0 innings in relief, surrendering three earned runs on four hits, while striking out two to earn the save.
Carr led the offense with three hits and four RBIs, including a three-run home run. Williams crossed the plate three times, walked, and tallied two hits while Cross delivered a two-run homer. Grant recorded three hits, drove in two runs, and scored once, showcasing his impact at the plate. Additionally, Thomas recorded two hits, including a homer, and tallied two runs.
The Majors opened the scoring in the first inning when senior
Mason Morgan singled through the left side, allowing Williams to score, eventually ending the inning tied 1-1. In the second inning, Thomas hit a solo home run to right field, giving Millsaps a 2-1 lead, which they maintained the rest of the game.
Millsaps extended its lead in the third with Cross two-run homer to left center, bringing Morgan home for a 4-1 advantage. The Stormy Petrels reduced the deficit in the fourth, but in the fifth inning, Grant doubled and later scored on a single by Carr. Williams sooned crossed the plate to extend the lead to 6-2 courtesy of a sophomore
Kyle Veal Jr. RBI single.
Millsaps added three more runs in the sixth inning with Carr's three-run homer stretching the lead to 9-3. Oglethorpe added three runs of its own in the bottom of the sixth to keep the game close.
In the seventh, Grant singled up the middle, driving in two more runs for an 11-6 lead. The eighth and ninth innings were scoreless for both teams, allowing the Majors to capture an 11-6 triumph and even the series.
