JACKSON, Miss. — The Millsaps College volleyball team dominated the court over the weekend, sweeping Centenary College, Huntingdon College, and Principia College while also earning a victory over LeTourneau University, all in front of an incredible crowd of fans inside the Hangar Dome.
On Friday, the Majors brought out the broom, sweeping Centenary and Principia College, 3–0, before battling past LeTourneau, 3–2, and bettering Huntingdon, 3–0, on Saturday to close out the Millsaps/Belhaven Invitational.
Against the YellowJackets, the Majors totaled 114 digs and 66 kills, while recording 30 kills against the Panthers, 8.5 total blocks against the Ladies and 61 digs in a strong outing to the opposing Hawks.
Match 1: Millsaps College 3, Centenary College 0
(25-12, 25-17, 25-14)
Junior Zoë LaCaze recorded eight kills on 12 attacks, hitting an impressive .667, while adding five total blocks to lead the team past the Ladies in the first match of the day.
Sophomore Madelynn Sasser led Millsaps with nine kills and added four digs to open the Invitational on Friday.
Classmate Rachel Zamjahn stood tall with 15 assists, adding two service aces and four digs. Senior Sandy Bourgeois contributed 13 digs, three assists, and a service ace.
Making their presence known at home, the Majors took on Centenary College and controlled the court from start to finish, showcasing their dominance while adding a few dance moves along the way to celebrate throughout the matchup.
Coming out hot, Millsaps seized control of the first set with a 10–0 run, turning a narrow 3–2 advantage into a commanding 13–2 lead.
Junior Abigail Drury served nine straight points, putting on a show inside the Hangar Dome while adding a kill and multiple assists to expand the lead way' command.
Fueled by excitement from the fans and cheers from the bench, the Majors continued to maintain their lead, closing out the first set with a decisive 25–12 victory.
Millsaps created separation in the second set, with Bourgeois having her way at the service line, scoring four straight points from 14-10 to 18-10 on a Centenary's error.
The Ladies cut the deficit to 19–15, but Millsaps responded with kills from Duncan, sophomore Laila Fredieu, and LaCaze, followed by a Fredieu service ace, to extend its lead to 23–15. Millsaps closed out the set, 25–17.
The Majors broke open the third set after Centenary pulled even at 7–7, later answering with seven straight points to take a 14–7 lead.
Not sweating, Sasser put Millsaps back in front with a kill, and Zamjahn served the next six points, including an ace and assists on kills by Sasser, sophomore Lily Luneau, and senior Amelia Bohl.
Millsaps finished the set with kills by freshman Jada Moore and Luneau for a 25-14 win over the guest.
Match 2: Millsaps College 3, Principia College 0
(25-17, 25-7, 25-14)
Sophomore Tatum Husby put on a clinic against the Panthers, recording 10 kills on 18 attacks while hitting .333 and adding a block assist.
Senior Caroline Russo tallied 12 assists, three service aces, and six digs as the veteran leader helped Millsaps take control.
Sophomore Lily Luneau added seven kills, hit .333, and contributed a block assist. Classmate Atlee Gonzales collected nine digs and served two aces.
Principia scored the first two points, but moments later, the Majors responded with an early run to surge past the Panthers, 6–3.
Getting the job done, Luneau and sophomore Kinney Boyle teamed up for a pair of blocks, while Boyle and Luneau added kills before Russo followed with back-to-back service aces.
Millsaps held a 13–9 lead before Principia rallied with five straight points to take a 14–13 advantage. Luneau quickly answered with a kill to even the set, while Boyle and Luneau added kills to help the Majors regain the lead, 16–14.
Principia got within 16-15, then a service error returned the serve to Millsaps, and junior McCullough Lawson served seven straight points, including an ace and a Husby kill, to push the lead to 24-15.
The Panthers won the next two rallies, but a service error closed the opening set for Millsaps, 25-17.
Millsaps controlled the second set from the opening sequence, building a 6-0 lead behind kills from Luneau, freshman Karalee Cormier, and Husby, plus two sophomore Atlee Gonzales service aces and a Principia attack error.
After Principia got on the board with a kill, Millsaps continued to widen the gap, with junior Mara Colón serving two aces during a stretch that moved the score from 9-2 to 13-2.
Boyle added back-to-back kills off assists from Colón and sophomore Anna Ware to extend the lead to 15–3.
Luneau's kill put Millsaps ahead 18-5, and McCullough Lawson followed with five straight service points, including two aces and a Husby kill, to make it 23-5.
Principia scored the next two points, but a service error brought the set point to 24-7, and Husby's kill from Caroline Russo closed the set at 25-7.
In the final set, Millsaps went up 4-2 on kills by sophomore Tatum Husby and junior Lily Bumpers, adding pressure on the Panthers. Principia pushed back on consecutive attack errors to take a 5-4 front.
Millsaps then scored five of the next six points, using kills by Bumpers, junior Jenna Nattinger and Husby, a Zamjahn service ace, and a Principia attack error to move in front 9-6.
Millsaps created separation again after Principia got within 13-10, using kills from Husby, Russo, and Husby during a four-point stretch that pushed the margin to 17-10.
Principia claimed the next two points, but Millsaps responded with a Principia service error and back-to-back aces from freshman Jada Moore to extend its lead to 20–12.
After a ladies' point, a block by Husby and freshman Kaleigh Miller sparked a four-point Millsaps run that included two service aces from Zamjahn and a kill by Husby.
Following a Millsaps service error, Zamjahn set Miller for the final kill as the Majors closed out the set, 25–14 to tame the Panthers.
Match 3: Millsaps College 3, LeTourneau University 2
(27-25, 18-25, 21-25, 25-13, 15-13)
Duncan led the Majors with 21 kills and 22.5 points while adding two blocks. Bourgeois posted a career-high 50 digs, along with eight assists and two service aces.
Ware finished with 29 assists and 14 digs. LaCaze added nine kills, four blocks, and 12.5 points to weaken the YellowJackets.
In the first set against LeTourneau, Duncan recorded three consecutive kills to give the Majors a 5–4 lead in the early back-and-forth battle.
Both teams continued to trade points throughout the remainder of the set. Duncan's kill knotted the score at 24–24 before Sasser put Millsaps back in front, 26–25. A LeTourneau attack error then sealed the set for the Majors
Millsaps mounted its biggest push midway through the second set, cutting LeTourneau's 15–10 lead to 15–13 with a Sasser kill, a LaCaze kill, and a Zamjahn service ace.
Earlier, Luneau helped Millsaps draw even at 9-9 with back-to-back kills, including one from Ware. LeTourneau responded after the Majors pulled within two, closing out the set 25–18.
An early 8-3 Millsaps lead in the third set came on Ware's serve for four straight points that included two Duncan kills and two YellowJackets attack errors.
LeTourneau answered with an eight-point run to move ahead 15-10, and Millsaps spent the rest of the set trying to close the gap.
Boyle helped a late push with consecutive Millsaps points before LeTourneau finished the set, 25-21.
Millsaps won the fourth set 25-13, using Ware's serve to turn a 19-11 advantage into a 23-11 cushion as the YellowJackets committed four straight errors.
LeTourneau scored twice, Boyl answered with a kill from Ware, and Duncan closed the set on a kill from Gonzales. In the fifth set, Millsaps erased an 11-9 deficit, tying it on a Duncan kill before Sasser put Millsaps ahead 12-11.
After LeTourneau tied the set at 12, Millsaps answered with a block by Luneau and Sasser and a LaCaze kill to reach 14-12. The YellowJackets got one point back, but a service error closed Millsaps' 15-13 fifth-set win.
Match 4: Millsaps College 3, Huntingdon College 0
(25-14, 25-14, 25-12)
Duncan led the Majors with 14 kills while hitting .444 and added one block assist. Bourgeois recorded 22 digs and added four assists and a service ace.
Drury finished with 18 assists, five digs, two kills, and a service ace. Bohl converted six kills on 11 attacks without an error, hitting 545.
Millsaps took the first set 25-14, closing on a 7-of-8 stretch after leading 18-13. The Majors held a 13-9 edge in kills, with Duncan recording five and Boyle adding four.
The Majors won the second set 25-14 after an 11-0 run changed a 2-1 deficit into a 12-2 lead, with Drury serving 10 straight points during the stretch.
finished the set with a 15-8 advantage in kills, led by six from Duncan, while Huntingdon recorded three service aces.
The Majors took the third set 25-12 behind a 12-6 advantage in kills and two service aces, with Bohl and Duncan recording three kills apiece.
