COLUMBUS, MISS. — The Millsaps women's soccer team battles past MUW, 1-0 at Roger Short Soccer Complex on Wednesday night.
Freshman Madison Perez had a great game going up against MUW tonight as she accumulated three shots on goal while securing the Majors only goal.
Classmate Eden Birch was credited with the assist on Perez's goal, took down the Owls with two shots, and one shot on goal to pull away from the host.
Senior Alex Bremond boasted five shots and four shots on goal, while freshman Victoria Viquez and sophomore Jordyn Templeton both installed two shots on goal to lead the Majors along the way against the Owls.
Freshman Kayla Borden made the difference defensively in tonight's matchup against MUW, where she registered nine saves against her opponents in her first collegiate start in a well-deserved finish for the Bossier City, La., native.
Millsaps did not hesitate to strike the Owls in the opening minutes of the contest as Bremond took a shot at the goal at 3:49 minutes on the scoreboard.
The Owls looking to defend their home, sent three consecutive shots of their own, but Borden would not be disrespected as she caught the trio of MUW shot attempts.
The host's goalkeeper also would not go down without a fight as she recorded two saves from Viquez and Birch moments later.
Millsaps would find their luck midway through the 21st minute as Perez came eye to eye with the Owls netkeeper sinking the ball inside the nets, scoring her first collegiate goal and giving the Majors a 1-0 lead.
In the final moments of the first half, the Owls looked to tie the contest with four shots but all would be collected by Borden's saves.
In the second half, MUW recorded eight saves while both teams recorded nine shots each.
The Owls goalkeeper held the game down, and halted the Majors with four saves within the 75th and 80th minutes of action as she fought hard inside the box.
MUW put their final attack on display as the Owls fired shots in the 83rd, 85th, 90th minutes. The first attempt was stopped once again by Borden, while the final shot came with 32 seconds remaining, but was launched over the net.
Bremond would give the Majors their final chance on a shot attempt before a corner kick and shot by the Owls would put away the contest, helping the Majors secured a 1-0 victory.
Millsaps returns home in their next contest and will host LaGrange College at 12 p.m. on Sunday. Live video will be available at FloCollege and live stats will be provided at gomajors.com.
