JACKSON, Miss. — The Millsaps College women's soccer team battled LaGrange College in a hard-fought contest Sunday at Harper Davis Field but fell to the Panthers, 4-3, after a late second-half goal.
Both teams played a competitive match, with Millsaps putting seven of its eight shots on goal. LaGrange held a 20-8 advantage in shots and scored three times after halftime.
The Majors' freshman goalkeeper, Kayla Borden, made seven saves, including four in the second half, while the Panthers placed 12 shots on frame.
Senior Alex Bremond recorded a goal and an assist for three points, adding three shots with two on goal. Freshman Madison Perez tallied two assists for Millsaps.
Classmate Eden Birch scored and put all three of her shots on goal. Borden made seven saves while playing all 90 minutes in goal.
LaGrange opened the scoring with a penalty-kick goal in the third minute, taking an early 1-0 lead over the Majors.
Millsaps quickly answered as Bremond found the back of the net to level the match at 1-1. Perez was credited with the assist at the 4:15 mark.
Borden kept the Panthers off the scoreboard with a save at 15:12, helping the Majors maintain the tie.
Millsaps continued to build momentum in the first half and took its first lead of the afternoon when Birden scored to make it 2-1. Perez recorded her second assist of the match on the goal.
The Majors added to their advantage as freshman Victoria Viquez found the back of the net, giving Millsaps a 3-1 lead heading into halftime following a strong first-half performance.
In the second half, Birch looked to capitalize on the Majors' scoring advantage but would be altered by a Panthers save at the 50th minute.
Borden continued to display a strong presence inside the box, making several key stops to keep Millsaps in front. LaGrange eventually found the back of the net to cut the deficit to 3-2.
In the 74th minute, Borden made two more saves to preserve the Majors' advantage. LaGrange, however, continued to pressure the Millsaps defense and eventually found the equalizer, tying the match at 3-3.
The Panthers continued to apply pressure late in the match and scored the deciding goal to take a 4-3 lead. Millsaps continued to fight until the final whistle, but LaGrange held on for the victory on Sunday.
