SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Millsaps College volleyball team opened conference play over the weekend at the Sewanee Quad Match, falling to Sewanee, 3-0, on Saturday before shaking back to sweep Maryville College, 3-0, on Sunday inside the Juhan Gymnasium.

Match 1: Sewanee 3, Millsaps 0
(20-25, 20-25, 23-25)

Senior Sandy Bourgeois recorded 18 digs and added a service ace. Sophomore Laila Fredieu served four aces and collected three digs. Junior Zoë LaCaze shared the team lead with six kills, hit .308, and added two block assists. Sophomore Rachel Zamjahn finished with a team-high 10 assists, a service ace, and a block assist.

In the first set, Sewanee (5-5, 1-1 SAA) jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind two consecutive kills. Millsaps (9-3, 1-1 SAA) would soon claw their way back into the set; senior Amelia Bohl delivered a kill of her own to cut into the Tigers' lead to 5-3.

Moments later, Bohl answered with another kill to even the set at 6-6 as the Majors battled their way back into the contest with a strong offensive performance.

Both teams continued trading points before Sewanee created its largest late cushion at 21-14. Despite a final push from the Majors, the Tigers held on to claim the opening set, 25-20.

Sewanee produced 12 kills in the second set, including five, while the Majors finished with five kills and committed 10 attack errors. The Majors also generated four service aces, with two from Fredieu and one each from Drury and Zamjahn.

Fredieu's consecutive aces trimmed Sewanee's advantage to 23-20 before the Tigers closed out the set, 25-20.

In the third set, Sewanee jumped out to a 3-0 margin before a kill from Luneau cut into the Tigers' advantage. Moments later, Millsaps continued to apply pressure as the Soott, La., native delivered a kill, followed by a service ace and a Sewanee attack error, trimming the Tigers' lead to 11-10.

Both teams continued to go toe-to-toe before the Majors erupted for a 5-0 run, capitalizing on three Sewanee attack errors and a kill from LaCaze to complete the comeback and take a 15-14 lead.

The remainder of the set remained neck-and-neck between the two conference opponents. Millsaps looked to escape the Tigers' grasp as a service ace and a kill pushed the Majors ahead, 23-22. However, Sewanee responded with three consecutive kills to close out the set 25-23 over the Majors. 

Match 2: Millsaps 3, Maryville 0
(25-23, 25-11, 25-14)

Duncan led Millsaps with 13 kills while hitting .409 and added one block assist. Bourgeois recorded a team-high 18 digs and added three assists. Drury finished with a team-best 22 assists, four digs and one service ace. Sasser added seven kills on a .412 hitting percentage with four block assists.

The Majors finished with a commanding 44-26 advantage in kills while hitting .275 compared to Maryville's (6-3, 0-2 SAA). 029. Millsaps also took advantage of 23 attack errors committed by the Scots throughout the match.
 
Millsaps also held advantages in digs (49-38) and total blocks (6-1), and freshman Khloe Duncan added 13 kills on a .409 hitting percentage. 
 
In the first set against the Scots, sophomores Madelynn Sasser and Kinney Boyle immediately applied pressure on Maryville with back-to-back kills, giving the Majors an early 2-0 lead.

The Scots responded with a 4-1 run to take their first lead of the contest. Maryville remained in front with an 8-5 advantage before a service error, an attack error, and two consecutive kills from Duncan allowed the Majors to battle back and even the set at 8-8.

Maryville would soon regain control and build a 16-13 advantage over the Majors. Millsaps responded with kills from Boyle and Duncan, followed by a service ace, to pull even with the Scots at 16-16.

Looking to create some breathing room, the Scots capitalized on a Millsaps attack error while adding two kills and a service ace to build a two-point advantage. 

Refusing to let up, the Majors raised their swords and charged past the Scots with a dominant 7-1 run, fueled by two consecutive kills from Duncan and kills from Boyle and LaCaze as Millsaps fought its way back into the set.

Drury served the Majors through four straight points early in the second set, with Boyle finishing each one with a kill as the Majors moved ahead 6-1.  
 
The Majors kept adding separation behind additional kills from Duncan, LaCaze, and Lily Luneau, and Drury added a service ace during a later scoring stretch. The Majors closed the set 25-11. 
 
Millsaps later trailed 8-7 before winning eight straight points, with Duncan supplying consecutive kills, Sasser adding a kill, and LaCaze and Sasser combining on back-to-back blocks during the surge to 15-8.  
 
The Majors later added a LaCaze ace and closed the third set with kills from Boyle, Luneau, and Duncan for a 25-14 set win. 
 
Millsaps took control of the second set early, turning a 2-1 lead into a 6-1 advantage as Boyle put down four straight kills during Drury's service turn.  
 
After Maryville got one point back, Luneau answered with a kill, and Duncan added three kills over the Majors' next four points as the lead reached 11-4. 
 
Sophomore Anna Ware's service stretch helped push the Majors from 11-4 to 14-4 with a Duncan kill and two Maryville attack errors before Sasser and Boyle kills kept the margin at double digits.  
 
The Majors added another three-point burst on Drury's serve, including a Boyle-Luneau block and Drury ace, to move ahead 21-7.  
 
LaCaze later delivered the kill for set point, and a Maryville attack error closed the Majors' 25-11 set win. 
 
The Majors turned the third set after falling behind 8-7, winning eight straight points to move in front 15-8.  
 
Ware served the final seven points of that push, with Duncan putting down three kills, Sasser adding one, and LaCaze and Sasser combining on consecutive blocks. Earlier,The Majors answered a tight opening stretch with kills from Luneau and Bohl, including a powerful swing from Bohl that evened the set at 8-8.
 
After Maryville scored three straight points to make it 17-12, the Majors responded with a LaCaze ace and later closed behind kills from Sasser, Bohl, Boyle, Luneau, and Duncan to finish the set at 25-14.

The Majors will be back in action on Friday to host Trinity University in Southern Athletic Association action beginning at 6:30 p.m. inside the Hangar Dome, live stats will be available and the game will streamed via FloCollege.
