JACKSON, Miss. - The Millsaps women's soccer team played tough and physical against the University of the Ozarks, but a late goal in the second half would give the visitors a 1-0 victory after the Majors fought tough on their home turf at Harper Davis Field on Sunday.
Freshman Haile Moorer recorded two shots, including one on goal, while senior Alex Bremond tallied three shots and freshman Eden Birch added one. Classmate Olivia Umanzor made nine saves in her second collegiate start as the Millsaps women's soccer team's goalkeeper.
In the intense heat for the Majors, Umanzor, freshman Amelia Smith, Moorer, and Bremond each played all 90 minutes for the Majors against the University of the Ozarks.
Millsaps created the first shot on frame at 6:13, when Moorer tested the Eagles' goalkeeper with an attempt that was saved in the bottom of the box.
The University of Ozarks then generated the next sustained push, with Umanzor saving shots from a pair of Eagles to stall her opponents.
During a scoreless first-half stretch. Umanzor made another save at 27:43 before the University of the Ozarks earned three late corners, and Bremond recorded a Millsaps shot at 44:38. Moments later Umanzor stuff another Eagles player with a save to end the first half in a 0-0 draw.
In the first half, Umanzor recorded five saves, while the University of the Ozarks contested eight shots. Millsaps opened the second half with pressure as Mooer sent a shot over the top of the goalpost at 47:05, and Bremond made two attempts between the 52nd minute.
The visitors kept pressing late, but Umanzor saved at 77:18 and 87:30 around Ozarks' corner kicks and additional attempts. However, at the 89:42 minute, Umanzor stopped a shot by the Eagles.
The opposing team responded with a hit at the top of the woodwork, and then scored to give the Ozarks a 1-0 lead, which stood as the final score.
The Majors will be back in action to face LeTourneau University at home on Saturday beginning at 5 p.m. at Harper Davis Field. Live video and live stats will be available at gomajors.com.
