Box Score JACKSON, MS- Alex Jackson's scoop and score late in the fourth got the Majors within a score, but Millsaps ran out of time in a Birmingham Southern 16-14 win on Saturday at Harper Davis Field.
The safety scooped up a Mickey Courtney fumble off a Jeff Milner sack and rolled 73 yards into the endzone for a touchdown to bring the Majors within two. Millsaps elected to kick deep with 330 left in the game. The Majors got the ball back at their own 20 with just seconds to play. An illegal forward pass on a hook and latteral and a fumble off a latteral on the final plays of the game dropped Millsaps to 1-4 on the year and 0-2 in the SAA.
The Majors took the opening kick off 69 yards on 12 plays. Caleb Martin rolled off the line on a corner route and capped off the drive with a two-yard touchdown catch. Zak Thrasher had two key rushes on the drive to keep the chains moving. Beau Brady added the extra point to make it 7-0.
The Majors and Panthers traded punts into the second quarter in what quickly turned into a defensive contest. BSC got on the board midway through the second on a Courtney pass to Drew Lopera, the extra point was missed and the Majors lead was trimmed to 7-6. After a Millsaps' drive stalled, the Panthers marched down the field in the final seconds of the half. Hagen Mancuso hit a 35-yard field goal and BSC took a 9-7 lead into the break.
Millsaps' opening possession of the second half started with promise. Joe McChrystal hit Zachary Borne and Isaiah Talton with passes to move the ball into Panther territory. However, a penalty and a sack stalled the drive and Ben Dudley was sent on to punt. It would be the deepest the Majors got into Panther territory in the second half, as they were limited to 175 yards of total offense.
BSC's responded and went ahead two scores with a 58-yard drive. A 13-yard Joe Moultrie touchdown run capped the drive and proved to be the difference on Saturday.
Alex Jackson had a tremendous game with 17 total tackles, 2.5 for loss and the scoop and score. Alex Foust also had a strong game at defensive tackle with 12 stops with three of them going for loss. Offensively, Tanner Menist led the receiving corps with 55 yards on four grabs. Thrasher threw for 118 yards and a score to lead the passing game.
Millsaps stays at home next weekend as they celebrate homecoming. The Sewanee Tigers make their first trip to Jackson in three seasons for the occasion. Kick-off is set for high noon.
