Box Score CONWAY, AR- Beau Brady's onside kick bounced out of bounds and the Millsaps Majors comeback fell short in a 35-30 loss at the Hendrix Warriors on Saturday afternoon.
Zak Thrasher threw for 305 yards and three touchdowns including two in the fourth quarter to lead the Majors' offense on Saturday. Zach Bell led the defense with 10 tackles, 2.5 sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss.
Hendrix struck first, midway through the first quarter on a Dayton Winn one yard run that capped a 52-yard drive. The Majors responded with their ground game, pounding out a 13 play, 64 yard drive that ended in a Beau Brady field goal. A minute into the second quarter, it was 7-3 Warriors.
The Warriors caught a big play, scoring 11 seconds later on a 71-yard pass play to make it 14-3. After trading punts, the Majors drove the ball inside the Warrior five-yard line. On fourth and one, Joe McChrystal was tackled for a loss and the Majors turned it over on downs deep in Hendrix territory. Hendrix put together a drive, but missed a short field goal to keep it 14-3 inside the two minute mark of the half.
Again, the Majors moved the ball but Thrasher was intercepted at the Hendrix seven, ending the scoring threat, it was 14-3 Hendrix at the half.
Hendrix would take the opening second half kick-off and drive 75 yards for a score to lead 21-3. A strong kick return from Rashad Sims got the Majors excellent field position near midfield. Raphael Johnson capped a seven-lay drive with a seven-yard scoring run to make it 21-10 after the extra point. Millsaps would score again on their next possession as Thrasher hit Nick Glover for a 36 yard scoring strike to move the game to 21-16, Brady missed the extra point to keep it a five-point ball game.
The Millsaps' defense held on the Warriors' next drive, forcing an incompletion on fourth down inside the Majors' 10. The Majors couldn't do much with their ensuing drive and a penalty on the punt gave the Warriors the ball near midfield. The Warriors would strike four plays later to take a 28-16 lead as the teams headed to the fourth quarter.
The teams would trade punts for the first half of the quarter. The Majors would drive into the Hendrix red zone but a fumble inside the 20 ended the scoring drive. The Majors would force their own turnover as Hendrix turned to their ground game to burn clock. Millsaps would recover a fumble, then covert as Thrasher hit Rashad Sims for 24-yard touchdown. The extra point was good to make it 28-23 Warriors with just over a minute left.
The ensuing on-side kick was returned by Hendrix for a touchdown as Hendrix regained a two-score lead at 35-23. Millsaps' two-minute offense went to work as Thrasher hit Beau Wells on two passes and Raphael Johnson scored on a 30-yard catch and run to make it 35-30 with under 10 seconds left. Brady's onside kick fell out of bounds and Hendrix kneeled out the clock to end the ball game.
The loss drops Millsaps to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the SAA. The Majors are off next weekend as they prepare for Birmingham Southern to visit on October 18th.
