Birmingham, AL – The Birmingham Southern defense forced four turnovers earlier today, as the Majors fell on the road 35-18.
Traveling over 200 miles in nearly three and a half hours to Krulak Stadium, the Majors looked to rebound in Alabama after a conference home loss last week. Birmingham Southern outscored the Majors 16-6 in the second half en route to a 35-18 win. The loss drops the Majors to 1-5 (0-4) on the year while the Panthers improve to 4-3 (2-3).
Millsaps won the coin toss and elected to receive to start the game. A quick three-and-out on the opening drive gave Birmingham Southern their first scoring chance of the day. The Panthers wasted little time in getting on the board with a 55-yard touchdown run by Justin Woolfolk. Woolfolk's run capped off a five play, 93-yard opening scoring drive for the Panthers.
On the ensuing drive, the Panthers forced a turnover. The Majors defense, however, held strong to force a turnover on downs. Following the defensive stand,
Chance Clowers and the Majors offense took over on a long 64-yard pass to
Andrew Warren.
The long pass and catch set up first and goal for the Majors as
Raphael Johnson was called upon to finish the drive. Johnson darted into the end zone from the Birmingham Southern three-yard line to give the Majors their first score of the day.
After a failed two-point conversion attempt, the score stood tied at 6-6. Birmingham Southern answered the Majors score with a long drive of their own. Samir Usman finished the Panther's seven play, 65-yard drive with a 36-yard rushing touchdown.
Usman's 36-yard rushing touchdown closed out the scoring for the first quarter, as the Panthers led 12-6. The Majors, however, quickly answered in the second quarter.
Andrew Warren again made a huge play, this time on a receiving touchdown. This score, however, marked the longest touchdown of the year for Millsaps.
The 92-yard passing touchdown from quarterback
Ty Proctor to Warren tied the game 12-12. Proctor's pass marked one of the longest scoring drives for the Majors on the year. The two play, 95-yard drive lasted 56 seconds and drew the game even in the second quarter.
Birmingham Southern again answered the Millsaps score with another long, sustained drive. Starting Panthers quarterback, Austin Martin, led Birmingham Southern on a six play, 59-yard scoring drive to regain the lead. Martin capped off the drive with a 23-yard pass to Jamal Watkins.
The touchdown by Watkins closed out the scoring for the first half, as the Panthers led 19-12. Following the intermission, Birmingham Southern began on offense where Austin Martin again orchestrated another long scoring drive.
Backed up on their own three-yard line, the Majors defense held strong by forcing a Panthers field goal. The 14 play, 59-yard drive lasted nearly nine minutes and ended with a 21-yard field goal from Ryder Andrews.
Andrews' field goal marked the only score of the third quarter, as the Majors only held the ball once in the 15-minute period. With four minutes left in the third quarter, the Panthers began another long scoring drive.
Martin led the Panthers on a 10 play, 70-yard scoring drive to start the fourth quarter. Jamal Watkins finished the drive on a 26-yard pass from Martin, which gave the Panthers a 28-12 lead.
The Panthers never looked back after the opening fourth quarter score, as they took advantage of a Majors turnover. After forcing an interception, the Birmingham Southern defense forced another Millsaps turnover with a 'scoop and score'. Trevor Dedecker ran 28 yards to the end zone after picking up a loose fumbled ball to increase the Panthers lead.
With six minutes left in the game,
Ty Proctor fired a 25-yard touchdown pass to
Kain Mitchell to cut the Birmingham Southern lead to 17. Following the Majors score and leading 35-18, the Panthers ran out the clock to secure their second conference win of the season.
Ty Proctor led the Majors in passing with two touchdowns and 252 yards through the air. Proctor finished the day with 14 completions on 27 attempts. In rushing totals,
Raphael Johnson led Millsaps with 26 yards and a touchdown on four attempts.
Andrew Warren had a career day in receiving with 169 yards and a touchdown. Warren's career day also included the season long 92-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter.
Defensively,
Jared Bullock and
Hector Sandoval led the Majors in tackles with 11 a piece.
Malcolm Ben had a pass breakup as
Alex Foust and
Chandler Loy forced two quarterback hurries in today's contest.
The loss drops the Majors to 1-5 on the year and 0-4 in conference play. The Majors will look to regroup next week as they travel to Missouri for their second game in a two-game road stint.
Next up for Millsaps is a conference road game this Saturday, Oct. 24th in St. Louis, Missouri where the Majors will face Washington (MO) for a 1:00 pm kickoff.
