Majors Fall to Washington on the Road

St. Louis, MO – The Millsaps football team fell to Washington (Mo.) earlier today in a conference road game played at Francis Field in St. Louis, Missouri.

The Majors trip to Missouri spanned nearly 500 miles as today's contest finished a series of two straight games on the road.  Washington University scored on their first seven possessions en route to a 70-32 victory.  The win improves the Bears to 5-2 (4-2) while the Majors drop to 1-6 (0-5) on the year.

Washington won the game's opening coin toss and deferred to the second half.  Starting Majors quarterback Chance Clowers led the Millsaps offense on a 12-play, 90 yard opening scoring drive to give the Majors an early lead.  Clowers finished the drive by calling his own number on a 26-yard dash to the end zone.

The Bears, however, answered the Millsaps touchdown with three straight scores of their own.  Starting Washington quarterback J.J. Tomlin led the Bears on a nine play, 50-yard drive to answer the score by the Majors.  Tomlin called his own number to cap off the drive on a six-yard rush to the end zone.

The Bears defense then forced a Millsaps fumble in the end zone, which was recovered by Washington defender Ross Chukerman.  Chukerman's recovery in the end zone gave the Bears a 14-6 first quarter lead.  Tomlin added another Washington score (this time through the air to Hank Childs) to give the Bears a 21-6 lead.

Down 21-6, the Major offense orchestrated another long scoring drive.  Chance Clowers completed a 21-yard pass to Grayson Walsh to complete a nine-play, 64-yard scoring drive.  Rashad Sims caught the following two-point conversion pass to cut the Washington lead to a touchdown.

The Bears, however, scored the next four touchdowns of the first half to lead 49-14.  Austin Smestad's one-yard rush to the end zone started the flurry of points for the Bears while J.J. Tomlin added another three scores through the air.  Max Elliot and Kevin Hammarlund were on the receiving end of the Tomlin touchdown passes to give the Bears a 49-14 halftime lead.

Austin Smestad added another score on the opening drive of the second half for the Bears, as they never looked back to earn a 70-32 victory.
