Millsaps Drops Homecoming Matchup to Berry

Jackson, MS – The Millsaps football team fell to Berry College earlier today by a score of 24-14.

The Majors hosted Berry in a homecoming matchup that featured less than ideal weather conditions.  Today's game was halted just six minutes into play after inclement weather moved into the area.  The weather delay lasted two hours as the game resumed shortly after 3 pm.  Berry won the matchup by outscoring Millsaps 17-0 in the second half.  The win improves Berry to 7-1 overall and 6-0 in conference play while the Majors fall to 1-7.

The Majors won the coin toss and elected to receive the ball to start the game.  After both teams exchanged multiple three-and-outs, Berry starting quarterback Dale Jackson led the Vikings on a six-play, 45-yard scoring drive.  Jackson called his own number on a 31-yard rush to the end zone to give the Vikings a 7-0 lead.

Following Jackson's rushing score, the weather began to take a turn for the worse.  With lightning in the area, the delay lasted over two hours.  The Majors, however, came out of the weather delay prepared to play.

The Majors defense used the wet conditions to their advantage by forcing two Berry fumbles.   Following one of the Vikings turnover, the Majors offense took over.  Starting quarterback Chance Clowers capitalized on the turnover by firing a 13-yard touchdown pass to Beau WellsPatrick McRaney added the extra point to tie the game 7-7 in the second quarter.

The Majors defense forced another turnover as the Majors again had great field position to work with.  Chance Clowers threw his second touchdown of the day on an eight-yard pass to Rashad Sims.  The pass and catch from Clowers to Sims gave the Majors a 14-7 halftime lead.

Berry, however, adjusted after the brief intermission.  Vikings running back Austin Lowe rushed for 43 yards to begin a four-play, 47-yard scoring drive.  Lowe had every carry on the four-play drive as his one-yard rush tied the game 14-14 in the third quarter.

The Vikings defense forced a pair of punts to set up a Mitchell Blanchard field goal attempt.  Blanchard made the 34-yard field goal, which gave Berry the lead.

Holding a 17-14 lead in the fourth quarter, the Vikings defense scored on an interception returned to the end zone.  Matt Farinella's 'pick six' gave the Vikings a 24-14 fourth quarter lead.

The Majors offense would threaten again near the goal line, but the Berry defense held to win the game 24-17.  The loss drops Millsaps to 1-7 on the year, as they will look to regroup for their final home game next week.

Next up for the Majors is a regular season home finale against Sewanee.  The Tigers will travel to Harper Davis Field for Millsaps Senior Day.  Kick off is set for next Saturday, Nov. 7th at 1:00 pm.
