Jackson, MS - The Majors football team secured their first conference win of the season with a 42-12 Senior Day victory over Sewanee.
Today's game marked the final home game of the regular season for Millsaps as the Majors held a special presentation for the seniors of 2015 prior to kickoff. The game itself was moved up two hours due to last night's inclement weather affecting the SAA men's soccer tournament - hosted by Millsaps. Despite the earlier start time and another wet, rainy Saturday the Majors came out focused and ready to play.
After scoring the opening points of the game Millsaps never trailed en route to a convincing 42-12 win.
Raphael Johnson had a career day rushing with 143 yards on 22 attempts and three touchdowns. The Majors defense also scored twice to help the Majors earn their first conference win of the season.
Sewanee won the opening coin toss and elected to receive. After an opening fumble forced by the Majors defense,
Chance Clowers and the offense took over.
Raphael Johnson capped off the first scoring drive for the Majors with a 24-yard dash to the end zone. The 24-yard rushing touchdown marked the first of the day for Johnson, but it would not be his last.
The Majors' defense forced another turnover on the ensuing Sewanee drive, this time on an interception via the hands of
Jared Bullock. Bullock's interception gave the Majors excellent field position where
Raphael Johnson's number was called upon again to increase the Majors lead.
Johnson capped off the two-play drive on another rush to the end zone, this time for 35 yards. For the second consecutive series, the Majors defense forced another Sewanee turnover. However, this turnover resulted in a touchdown. Majors linebacker
Hector Sandoval picked up the loose ball and darted 25 yards to the end zone. Sandoval's fumble recovery gave Millsaps a commanding 21-0 first quarter lead.
Sewanee would answer the Majors score with a long drive of their own. Tigers quarterback Allan Parrott gave Sewanee some much-needed momentum by completing a 49-yard pass to Steven Hearn. Parrott called his own number to complete the six-play, 77-yard scoring drive late in the first quarter.
Leading 21-6, the Majors wasted little time early in the second quarter to score again. Less than two minutes into second quarter play, Johnson earned a scoring hat trick on a four-yard run to the end zone. Johnson's third rushing touchdown capped off an 11-play, 73-yard drive for the Majors.
Both teams traded punts throughout the course of the second quarter. That is, until
Chance Clowers and the Majors offense took over with three minutes remaining in the half. Clowers fired a 19-yard pass to
Kain Mitchell in the back of the end zone with 59 seconds left in quarter to give Millsaps a commanding 35-6 lead.
After the intermission both teams took the field in driving rain and wet conditions. The Majors defense again used the conditions to their advantage by forcing another turnover that led to a score.
Chandler Loy returned an intercepted Kevin Bolak pass to increase the Majors lead 42-6.
Sewanee added another score in second half, but fell to the Majors 42-12. It was a banner day for Millsaps as the Majors earned their first conference victory on Senior Day in the final home game of the season. Johnson's career day also highlighted Saturday's play as he finished with 143 yards on 22 rushing attempts and three touchdowns.
Chance Clowers lead the Majors in passing with 114 yards on seven completions and a touchdown.
Tanner Menist and
Caleb Martin led in receiving with 44 and 30 yards on two receptions each.
Kain Mitchell also stated a scoring reception on a 19-yard touchdown catch.
Collectively, the Majors rushing attack totaled over 200 yards on the ground and three touchdowns. Defensively, the Majors scored twice on a fumble recovery and 'pick six' interception return.
The Majors also celebrated the outstanding careers of eight graduating seniors today.
Robert Arledge,
Javis Aultman,
Jake Brownlee,
Hunter Coleman,
Pierce Cotton,
Raphael Johnson,
Eric Martin, and
Drew Ward were all honored prior to kickoff as part of a special Senior Day presentation.
For the Majors, today marks the first win in seven games and begins the month of November play with a victory. Saturday's team win also sets up a great deal of positive momentum for the final game of the season next week.
Next up for the Majors is a final road conference game to close out the 2015 season. The Majors will travel to Memphis for a season finale against Rhodes College. Kickoff is set for 1 pm next Saturday, November 14th.
