Men's Basketball Falls in Overtime to Austin

Box Score Jackson, MS – The Majors fell earlier tonight to Austin College in an intense, dramatic overtime-midweek nonconference game.

The Roos outscored the Majors 10-6 in overtime to continue their unbeaten season.  Tonight's evenly matched contest featured several lead changes and multiple ties as the Majors closed out their final home game of 2015.  Following tonight's matchup, the Millsaps Men's Basketball team will begin a six-game road trip heading into 2016.  Down 32-29 at the half, Millsaps rallied to tie the game 68-68 at the end of regulation.  The Majors, however, went 2-10 from the field in the extra five minutes to fall 78-74.

The Majors did, however, outscore the Roos in points from the bench (28-15), points off turnovers (14-12), second chance points (23-4) and points in the paint (34-26).  The Roos earned six points on fast break opportunities while the Majors had four.  Senior guard Marc Robertson and freshman guard Trent Markwith both earned double-doubles as the Majors mounted a come-from-behind rally in the second half.

Down by ten points midway through the second half, the Majors went on a 16-6 run to tie the game 57-57.  The Roos answered with a quick layup from Stephen Igbinosa, which began a back-and-forth finish to tonight's contest.  With 42 seconds left in regulation, the Majors took a two-point lead on a Marc Robertson layup.  The Roos answered with two free throws to tie the game with 30 seconds left.

With the final possession and chance to take the lead, the Majors failed to convert on a late jumper, which sent the game to overtime.  In overtime, the Roos shot 75 percent by connecting on 3-4 field goals.  They also connected on three free throws to seal the game – and eighth consecutive win to start the season.

Marc Robertson led the Majors in point totals with 17 (14 rebounds), while Joshua McSwain and Trent Markwith both totaled 14 points in tonight's loss.  Quinn Atkinson also totaled 11 points, as the Majors begin their longest road trip of the season this weekend.

Up next for the Majors is a trip to the Pacific Northwest to face Whitworth and Whitman in Washington.  Millsaps will travel to Spokane, Washington first to face Whitworth Saturday, Dec. 19.  Tip off from Washington is set for 3 pm PST against the Pirates.
