Jackson, MS – The Millsaps Women's Basketball team earned their fourth win of the season earlier tonight with a 63-50 victory over Austin College.
Tonight's victory continues the Majors unbeaten streak at home as they led by as much as 19 points in the second half. Austin College would attempt a come-from-behind rally on a 17-7 fourth quarter run, but the Majors held off the Roos to improve to 4-3 on the season.
The Majors trailed only twice in the first half to take a commanding third quarter lead. Tonight's lead – and win, was largely due to the Majors ability to outscore the Roos inside the paint. Millsaps outscored Austin College 28-12 for points in the paint while the Majors bench had a slight lead over the Roos' bench 28-26. The Majors also led in fast break points (4-2) and second chance points (5-3) as well.
Leading by seven at the half, the Majors began the third quarter on a 13-1 run. From there, Millsaps never looked back by outscoring the Roos 15-11 in the third quarter and 21-19 in the fourth. The Roos did, however, attempt a come-from-behind rally late in the game.
A good three-pointer from Caitlyn Collins cut the Majors lead to single digits with just 90 seconds left. From there, the Majors never allow another Austin College score as a pair of
Beverly Holmes and
Katie Connor free throws sealed the game – and fourth win of the year for Millsaps.
Millsaps had three players score in double digits as
Beverly Holmes led the way with 13 points.
Marissa Taylor and
Kala-Jewel Freeman also earned 12 and 11 points for tonight's win. Collectively, Millsaps shot 41 percent from the field by going 22-53 and 33 percent on three-pointers by going 6-18.
Tonight's win sets up the final home game of 2015 for Millsaps Women's Basketball. The Majors will face Howard Payne University Friday, Dec. 18th before a seven-game road trip heading into 2016. Friday's game against the Yellow Jackets is set to tip off at 3 pm from the Hangar Dome here at Millsaps College.
