Majors Fall in Conference Road Game

Box Score

Conway, AR - The Majors football team fell to Hendrix College earlier today by a score of 45-34.

The loss drops Millsaps to 1-3 on the year and improves Hendrix to 2-1.  The 284-mile road trip to Conway marked the second consecutive conference game for the Majors.  Hendrix running back Dayton Winn rushed for a school record 226 yards and four touchdowns on 22 attempts as the Warriors earned a 45-34 victory.

After winning the coin toss the Majors elected to receive and start the contest on offense.  The Majors started fast with a quick first down, but then turned the ball over.  Hendrix junior defensive back Shaquille Grant picked off starting quarterback Ty Proctor's second pass of the day to give the Warriors excellent opening field position.

On the ensuing drive the Warriors moved the ball to the Majors nine-yard line, but were forced to attempt a 27-yard field goal from Steve Crenshaw.  Crenshaw's kick sailed wide left as the Majors defense held strong early in the first quarter.

Following the missed field goal, Millsaps began to create some momentum on offense.  Ty Proctor started the drive on a 39-yard rush to the Hendrix 41 yard line.  Seven plays later, Millsaps faced first and goal at the Warriors three-yard line.

Hendrix, however, had a defensive stand of their own, as they stopped the Majors on fourth down at the one-yard line.  Following a Hendrix punt on the ensuing drive, the first quarter came to an end with both teams scoreless through 15 minutes of play.

The Warriors began the scoring for the day early in the second quarter.  Junior quarterback Seth Peters completed a 26-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Ben Luedtke to give the Warriors a 7-0 second quarter lead.

On the ensuing kickoff, Rashad Sims gave the Majors good field position on a 45-yard kickoff return to the Hendrix 43-yard line.  Ty Proctor continued the positive momentum by firing a 33-yard pass to Andrew Jarreau to give the Majors first and goal at the Warriors ten-yard line.

Proctor finished off the five play, 43-yard drive by calling his own number on a seven yard rush to the end zone.  Following a good two-point conversion (Proctor to Sims), the Majors led 8-7 early in the second quarter.

Hendrix, however, answered the Millsaps score on an 11-play, 70-yard touchdown drive.  Junior running back Dayton Winn capped of the drive on a one-yard rush to give Hendrix the lead.  The touchdown marked the first of Winn's record setting day.

Millsaps again started another offensive drive with favorable field position after Crenshaw's kickoff went out of bounds.  Ty Proctor wasted no time in moving the Majors into scoring position.  His 49-yard pass to Zach Borne gave the Majors first and 10 at the Hendrix 16-yard line.

Two plays later, Taz Watson darted to the end zone on a six-yard touchdown run.  Watson's score was the final of the first half, as both teams went into the locker room tied 14-14.

Hendrix began to utilize Winn's skill set more in the second half by running the ball.  The transition to the run game proved effective, as Winn capped off the second half opening drive on a 38-yard rushing touchdown.

Following a Ryan Grace punt Hendrix scored on a Steve Crenshaw 44-yard field goal.  The long field goal gave the Warriors a 10-point lead halfway through the third quarter of play.

Following the field goal, the Majors offense orchestrated a long, five-minute drive that led them to the Hendrix 27-yard line.  The long drive, however, ended on a third down interception by Warriors senior defensive back Caleb Shannon.

The Warriors started their next drive on their own 38-yard line following the interception.  Quarterback Seth Peters quickly completed a long pass of 45 yards to Ethan Hoppe to give the Warriors first and ten at the Millsaps 17-yard line.

Following the long completion, Peters again found the end zone on a 17-yard pass to Taylor Tibbits, giving Hendrix a 31-14 third quarter lead.

Following a Majors punt, the Warriors again scored on another touchdown from Dayton Winn.  Winn's 44-yard rushing touchdown capped off a quick three play, 58-yard scoring drive early in the fourth quarter.

The Majors answered on a long seven play, 65-yard drive capped off by an Andrew Warren rushing touchdown.  The Majors trailed Hendrix 38-20 following Warren's touchdown midway through the fourth quarter.

Hendrix continued to give Dayton Winn rushing opportunities, as they attempted to close out the game by running the ball.  Winn's fourth (and record-breaking) touchdown occurred on a three-yard rush into the end zone.  Winn's run ended a 10 play, 70-yard scoring drive for Hendrix, giving them a 45-20 lead.

The Majors added two more scores late in the fourth quarter (Chance Clowers pass to Ty Durham and Chance Clowers pass to Zach Borne), but fell to Hendrix by a final score of 45-34.

Freshman quarterback Chance Clowers led the Majors in passing with 205 yards and two touchdowns on 15 completions (20 attempts).  Andrew Warren led Millsaps in rushing with 81 yards and a touchdown for the day.

Hendrix improves to 2-1 on the year and 1-0 in conference play while the Majors fall to 1-3 and 0-2 in conference play.

Millsaps will have a chance to rest and regroup as they have a bye week next weekend.  The week off allows the Majors an extra seven days to prepare for their next home game in two weeks.

Next up for Millsaps is another SAA matchup at Harper Davis Field.  Kickoff is set for two weeks from today on Oct. 10th at 1:00 pm against Centre.
