Jackson, MS – The Millsaps Men's Tennis Team fell in their season opening match to Belhaven yesterday 6-3.
 
Wednesday's match begins the regular season for the Majors, as they welcome the addition of a newly renovated tennis surface and complex.  Emerson Brundick and Josh Shearin both won in singles matchups while the duo of Diego Marti-Vertiz and Alex Centurion won in doubles. 
 
In doubles, the sophomore pair of Diego-Marti Vertiz and Alex Centurion led Millsaps.  Both start the season strong after a successful campaign in 2015.  The duo defeated Gabriel Da Costa and Harry Amor 8-4 to secure the doubles win for the Majors.
 
In singles, senior Emerson Brundick secured a complete win in the three spot by defeating Da Costa 6-4, 6-2.  Freshman Josh Shearin also earned his first win with the Majors by defeating Marcus Creese 6-3, 6-1.
 
In the two spot, Alex Centurion played a high quality, intense match against Thomas Ojeda that went to a 10-point tiebreaker.  Both players fought hard, but Ojeda eventually won the close match 11-9 in the final, match deciding set.
 
"Overall it was a good match for us to learn from, they're a good team," Head Tennis Coach Jason Box said.  "I think we got better yesterday.  We needed match play so this was really good for us.  Everybody got a quality match whether they won or loss so that was important for us."
 
The Majors will look to rebound with a pair of nonconference home games this weekend.  First up for Millsaps Men's Tennis is a matchup against Centenary this Friday, Feb. 20th.  Doubles play against the Gents will start at 9:00 am followed by another matchup later in the day against Tougaloo at 11:30 am.
