Millsaps Tennis Garners 2026 ITA Academic Awards

Women's Team Recognized for Seventh Straight Season, Six Individuals Shine Academically

GILBERT, Ariz. – A total of six student-athletes from the Millsaps College tennis programs were named 2026 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar Athletes. The women's tennis team was also recognized for the seventh consecutive season as an ITA All-Academic Team. The ITA announced both team and individual honors on Wednesday, July 15. 
 
On the women's side, the Majors posted a 3.487 team GPA during the 2025-26 academic year, representing Millsaps College with distinction. 
 
Sophomore Malakie Smith boasted an impressive 4.0 GPA to make the ITA Academic Award for the second consecutive season in her collegiate career. 
 
Classmate Riley McClain also earned the honor with a 3.916 GPA, receiving ITA Academic Award recognition for the second successful year. 
 
Senior Alexis Oliver received praise for accomplishing a 3.525 GPA in her academic studies to finish the women's tennis program out strong inside the classroom.

Alongside her teammates, the Clarksdale, Miss., native has earned this award twice.  
 
On the men's team, sophomore Sebastian Gonzalez posted a perfect 4.0 GPA combined in the Fall and Spring semesters, and has earned the award in back-to-back seasons.  
 
First-year student Jon Nguyen added his name on the ITA Academic list as a Scholar Athlete by pursuing his academic studies with a 3.78 GPA. 
 
Also highlighting the Majors' excellence in academics, freshman Bradley Schiaffino held it down, excelling in the classroom with a 3.541 GPA to close out strong.

To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, one must meet the following requirements:   

  • Have a grade point average of at least 3.5 (on a 4.00 scale) following the 2025-26 academic year.   

  • Be listed on the institutional eligibility form.   

To be named an ITA All-Academic Team, programs must meet the following requirements:   

  • Have a team grade point average of 3.2 or above (on a 4.00 scale),   

  • All student-athletes included should be listed on the institutional eligibility form.   

  • All varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year.
