Box Score Demorest, GA – The Millsaps Baseball Team fell in a nonconference matchup to Virginia Wesleyan earlier today by a score of 10-5.
Today's contest began the 2016 Piedmont Early Spring Classic where the Majors will play three nonconference games over the weekend in Georgia. Millsaps took a 5-4 lead after a three-run top of the sixth. The Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan, however, answered with a six run, bottom of the sixth – and never looked back. The win gives Virginia Wesleyan a 1-0 start on the young season while the Majors fall to 2-5.
In the first,
Isaac Glenn put Millsaps on the board with an RBI double to center field. Glenn scored leadoff hitter
Cavan Breland while
Lee Ogletree later scored Glenn on an RBI single.
From there, Virginia Wesleyan began the meticulous comeback effort with a run in the second, pair of runs in the third and another run in the fourth. Millsaps trailed 4-2 until
Isaac Glenn got things started in the top of the sixth.
Millsaps moved into scoring position after an error allowed Glenn to reach first, followed by
Lee Ogletree being hit by a pitch.
Jimmy Fondren then came in to pinch hit with runners at first and second.
Fondren made the most of the pinch-hitting opportunity with a single to right field, which scored Glenn. A balk moved Fondren to second and Ogletree to third, leaving
Seth Trulock with an opportune at-bat.
Trulock delivered with an RBI ground out followed by a
Chase Callaway sacrifice RBI to give the Majors a 5-4 lead. When the smoked settled from the positive top of the sixth, Millsaps scored three runs on one hit and one error.
The Marlins, however, responded with six runs in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead. An error, RBI single, two RBI triple and two-run homerun allowed Virginia Wesleyan to take a five run lead. Neither team scored again as the Marlins closed out the game to eventually earn the 10-5 win.
Logan Patterson led the Majors with two hits while
Jimmy Fondren,
Lee Ogletree,
Isaac Glenn,
Andy Page and
Cavan Breland each recorded one. For the final stat line, the Majors totaled five runs on seven hits and four errors while the Marlins finished with 10 runs on 14 hits and four errors as well.
The Majors will look to rebound tomorrow in the second day of the Piedmont College Early Spring Classic. Up next for Millsaps Baseball is a matchup against York College tomorrow, Feb. 20th. First pitch from Loudermilk Field is set for 1:00 pm EST.
