Box Score 2 Jackson, MS – The Millsaps Softball Team improved to 4-2 on the year with a pair of wins over Huntingdon College and the University of Dallas earlier today.
Today's play begins the Millsaps Softball Tournament, hosted by the Majors. The Majors never trailed in either game as they improve over .500 after today's contests.
Rayne Gravat homered twice in the first game to help Millsaps earn a 7-1 win over the Hawks. In the second game, starting pitcher
Danielle Faucheux struck out nine batters, as the Majors secured a 5-2 victory.
In the first game, Millsaps started fast with a lead off single to left field by
Missy Romero. Kathryn Romero then singled followed by a ground out to advance the runners to scoring position.
With runners in scoring position, clean up batter
Rayne Gravat put Millsaps on the board. Gravat crushed a three-run shot to right field, which gave the Majors their first lead of the day.
Gravat's three run homer would be the only runs the Majors needed, as they never trailed for the remaining six innings.
Millsaps added another run in the third with a
Lexi Barron single through the left side, which scored
Hannah Doggett. In the fourth, Gravat again stepped up to bat with runners in scoring position.
Gravat delivered with another three-run home run, this time to center field. Gravat's second homer ended the first game scoring for the Majors, as they secured a 7-1-nonconference victory.
Starting pitcher
Cassidy DeNoon improves to 3-1 on the year by pitching another complete game. DeNoon only gave up one run on two hits and struck out five batters.
A half hour later, the Majors again took the field, this time to face the University of Dallas. The Majors again started the game fast with a three-up, three-down top of the first. Following the quick half inning, Millsaps scored four unanswered runs to take the lead.
Leadoff hitter
Missy Romero reached first after being hit by a pitch. She then stole second, followed by a Kathryn Romero single up the middle. With the bases loaded,
Rayne Gravat hit an RBI single to put the Majors on the board.
Another hit by pitch scored Kathryn Romero, which kept the bases loaded. A
Rayner LeBlanc RBI single and
Kaitlyn Casias sacrifice fly ended the first inning scoring with the Majors leading 4-0.
When the smoke settled from the positive first inning, Millsaps totaled four runs on three hits. The Majors added another run on a
Kat Romero RBI single in the fourth to give Millsaps a 5-0 lead.
From there, the Majors closed out the game with effective pitching and defense. Starting pitcher
Danielle Faucheux improves to 1-1 on the year by pitching a complete game. Faucheux gave up two runs on three hits and struck out nine batters.
In the first game
Rayne Gravat led the Majors with three hits and six RBIs, while Kathryn Romero and Gravat led the second game with two hits each. Both DeNoon and Faucheux earn wins with two complete games, as the Majors sweep the first day of tournament play.
Now at 4-2, Millsaps will face another pair of games tomorrow to close out the weekend. First up for the Majors is a rematch against Dallas. First pitch from the Millsaps Softball Complex is set for 10:00 am tomorrow, Feb. 21st.
