Jackson, MS – The Millsaps Men's Tennis Team fell in a close matchup to Loyola (New Orleans) earlier today by a score of 5-4.
Today's intense, back and forth matchup drops Millsaps Men's Tennis to 3-3 on the young season. The contest itself came down to the final pairings in singles play, as the Majors and Wolf Pack played the closest matchup of the season thus far.
The duo of
Alex Centurion and
Diego Marti-Vertiz got things started for the Majors with a doubles win in the one spot 8-2. Loyola, however, answered by winning the two and three spot doubles matchups to take a 2-1 lead.
Heading into singles play, the Majors gained a boost from Centurion and Marti-Vertiz again with a pair of intense singles wins. Loyola responded with wins at the three, four and five spots to clinch the match.
Millsaps earned singles wins at the one and two spots and from
Cooper Cearley at the six spot with a 6-3, 6-0 victory.
Avinash Ananth and
Josh Shearin fought hard to push their opponents to three sets in the three and five spots, but the Wolf Pack eventually secured the close 5-4 win.
Now at 3-3, the Majors will look to rebound with the first road matchup of the season next weekend. Millsaps Men's Tennis will travel to Lookout Mountain, Georgia to face Covenant next Friday, March 4
th at 2:00 pm CST.
