Box Score 2 Jackson, MS - The Millsaps Softball Team began their season with an Opening Day double-header against Louisiana College.
The Majors and Wildcats split the two games with Louisiana College winning the first 4-0 and Millsaps winning the second 9-5. Majors' starting pitcher
Cassidy DeNoon pitched all 14 innings of today's action, as she - along with the Majors, move to 1-1 on the early year.
The Wildcats earned the first win of the day by holding the Majors to just four hits. Six Majors were left on base as
Missy Romero went 2-3 while
Kat Romero and
Megan Murray both went 1-3. Louisiana College's starting pitcher, Savannah Settle earned the win, as she pitched all seven innings for the Wildcats.
Louisiana College won the first game by scoring a run in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings. The second game, however, proved to be a much higher scoring - and more favorable contest for the Majors.
The Millsaps defense began the second game fast with a quick three-up, three-down in top of the first. From there, leadoff hitter
Missy Romero singled to center field to get things started for the Majors. A
Hannah Doggett RBI double scored Romero and gave the Majors their first lead of the day.
Trailing 1-0, the Wildcats answered in the second inning with five runs. The five runs on four hits and multiple RBIs gave Louisiana College their first and only lead of the game.
Following the top of the second inning, the Majors answered with an emphatic eight unanswered runs. The comeback would not take long to start either.
In the bottom of the second
Missy Romero scored
Mary Kate Bozeman on a double to left field. From there,
Rayne Gravat doubled down the right field line to score two more Majors. The tying run was scored on a
Megan Murray ground out to the shortstop, which sent
Hannah Doggett home. A
Sarah Scales single would retake the lead for Millsaps with the score at 6-5.
After the five run second inning,
Cassidy DeNoon and the Majors never allowed another run. DeNoon only allowed two hits in the final five innings, as the Majors added three insurance runs to secure the first win of the season.
Additionally, first year Head Coach
Erin Clary gets her first win with the Majors with the 9-5 victory today as well.
Hannah Doggett,
Megan Murray and
Katelyn Murray all went 2-3 in today's second game while
Sarah Scales finished 2-4.
Rayne Gravat went 3-4 with two RBIs and
Missy Romero finished 3-5 with an RBI.
Katelyn Murray also totaled two RBIs for Millsaps.
Now at 1-1, the Majors will continue play at home with another double-header next Saturday, Feb. 13th against Centenary College. First pitch from the Millsaps Softball Complex is set for 1:00 pm.
