Softball Drops Pair of Midweek Games to BSC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Jackson, MS – The Millsaps Softball Team dropped a pair of games in the first day of a three-game series with Birmingham Southern by scores of 8-0 and 9-2.

Tuesday's double-header marks the conference home opener for Millsaps, as they drop to 13-12 (2-3) while the Panthers improve to 18-4 (8-0).  Junior catcher Rayner LeBlanc led the Majors in hits for the day with four (two in each game).  LeBlanc and Sarah Scales led the day in RBIs with one each for the second game.

Birmingham Southern, who is nationally ranked in the top 25, got the scoring started early in the first game with a run in the first.  The Panthers scored again – this time with a pair of runs in the second – before closing out the game with five runs in the seventh.

The Majors finished the first game with five hits via Kat Romero, Katelyn Murray, MK Bozeman and Rayner LeBlanc (2).  Both starting pitchers completed full games with seven innings pitched, as the Panthers' Taylor Harkins earned the win.

In the second game, Birmingham Southern again got things started fast scoring six runs in the first two innings.  Leading 6-0 in the third, the Panthers never looked back.

Millsaps then scored their first runs of the day in the fifth. A leadoff single through the left side by Kat Romero got things started.  Missy Romero then walked, setting up an opportune at-bat for Sarah Scales.  She delivered with a well-placed single through the left side, which put the Majors on the board.

Rayner LeBlanc then doubled to right, which scored Romero and ended the positive fifth inning with two runs on three hits.

The Panthers, however, closed out the game to eventually earn a 9-2 win.  Rayner LeBlanc and Sarah Scales led the second game in hits with two each.  The duo also recorded the two RBIs for Millsaps, as the Majors will look to rebound with a final game tomorrow.

Millsaps and Birmingham Southern will play the series finale tomorrow before continuing conference play later this weekend.  First pitch for game three between the Majors and Panthers is set for noon at the Millsaps Softball Complex.
