Softball Falls in Saturday Double-Header to Berry

Jackson, MS – The Millsaps Softball team fell to Berry in a pair of games on Saturday by scores of 6-0 and 2-1.

Saturday's double-header began a three-game series between the Vikings and Majors, as Berry led throughout both contests.  Millsaps falls to 18-18 with the pair of losses while Berry improves to 26-6.

The Vikings secured the game one victory scoring once in the fourth inning and five in the fifth inning.  Berry took advantage of two home runs in the contest as Kaitlyn Casias led the Majors in hits with two.

At the conclusion of the first game, a special presentation was held on the field to recognize the 2016 seniors for Millsaps Softball.  Shortstop Missy Romero and outfielder Katelyn Murray were honored for their outstanding hard work, leadership and dedication to positively growing the Millsaps Softball program in their years as Majors.

After the special presentation, the second game of the day began between the Vikings and Majors.  Pitcher Cassidy DeNoon started both contests for Millsaps pitching two complete games on the day.  In the second game, she allowed only two runs (one unearned) and six hits while striking out two batters.

Berry again took an early lead scoring once in the first and third innings.  Millsaps, however, answered in the fifth scoring their first run of the day on an RBI double via Missy Romero

MK Bozeman began the positive inning with a leadoff single and later advanced to second on a single by Kat RomeroMissy Romero's double put the Majors on the board, as Millsaps finished the positive inning with one run on three hits.

Cassidy DeNoon and the Majors' defense ended a scoring threat in the sixth with a runner at third, but Millsaps failed to score in the bottom half of the inning, sending the game to the ninth with Berry leading 2-1.

Two fly outs and a ground out in the top of the seventh gave the Majors one final chance to tie the game.  Two walks and a wild pitch put the tying run at third and winning run at second, but the Vikings responded forcing consecutive strikeouts to end the game and earn the series win.

In all, the Vikings earned the game-two win with a number of timely outs, as 11 Majors were left on base for the contest.

Kat Romero, Missy Romero, Rayne Gravat, Sarah Scales and MK Bozeman all recorded a hit as the Majors finished the game with one run on five hits.

Now at 18-18, the Majors will look to rebound with the final regular season home game tomorrow, April 10th.  First pitch for the third and final game between the Vikings and Majors is set for 12:00 pm at the Millsaps Softball Complex.
