SHERMAN, Texas – Millsaps College scored the opening points of the game, but Austin College came back with three TD passes in the second quarter and then held off a comeback by the Majors in the third quarter to come away with a 33-19 Southern Athletic Association (SAA) football win. Senior
Isaiah Talton (Dallas, Texas) ran for 128 yards and one score for Millsaps.
Millsaps (3-3, 2-2 SAA) got started early when sophomore
Dylan Cross (Slidell, La.) jumped on a fumble on the first play from scrimmage, giving the Majors the ball on the Austin eight. The Roos defense held, however, allowing just one yard to Millsaps and forcing the Majors to settle for a field goal.
That proved to be all of the scoring in the first half for Millsaps as Austin (3-4, 1-4 SAA) picked up three TD passes from Colt Collins of 48, 45, and 39 yards in the second quarter, with the final toss to Brennan Ellis coming with 13 second left in the half and making it 19-3. The Roos defense held Millsaps in check in the second quarter, allowing the Majors just 37 yards as they took the 16-point lead at the half.
Receiving the second half kickoff, Millsaps put together its best drive to that point of the game, going 75 yards in seven plays. Talton had all but four yards of the drive himself and finished it off with a 24-yard run. An inspired Majors defense then held Austin to a three-and-out and after a punt, Millsaps had the ball again at its own 14.
This drive proved to be just as effective as the first as the Majors drove down the field in 13 plays, picking up key runs of 28 yards by senior
Ty Proctor (Columbiana, Ala.) and 15 yards by junior
Andrew Warren (Ocean Springs, Miss.). Junior
Chance Clowers (Monroe, La.) finished off the drive with a 16-yard scoring toss to junior
Ty Durham (Geronimo, Texas) and after the extra-point by sophomore
Hunter Sellen (Covington, La.), the Majors had pulled within three at 19-16 with 3:01 left in the third.
That would be as close as Millsaps would get, however, as Austin responded on its next drive. On a third and nine Collins hit on a 51-yard pass play that set up his own two-yard scoring run that made it a 10-point game. Midway through the fourth quarter the Majors pulled back within a touchdown when Sellen connected on a 27-yard field goal, but the Roos answered on their next drive on a six-yard TD run by Evan Powell with 3:16 left that effectively put the game out of reach.
