SEWANEE, Tenn. – In the quarterfinal match of the SAA men's soccer tournament, the sixth seeded Majors defeated the fourth seeded Sewanee Tigers 4-1 at Sewanee Saturday afternoon.
Offense was in full effect during the match and the defense did their job as well for the Majors.
Tore Schütt (Hamburg, Germany) began the scoring for Millsaps when he received a pass from
Alex Bourland (Charleston, S.C) in the 10th minute and found the back of the net.
Millsaps scored two more times in the first half. Schütt found
Brett Judd (Monroe, La.) in the 36th minute who completed the play with a goal to bring the score to a 2-0. The Majors scored once again the 40th minute, this time it was
Johannes Tonneson (Bad Oldesloe, Germany) who scored in the 40th minute off another assist from Schütt to give the Majors a 3-0 lead at halftime.
Sewanee would not go down without a fight. The Tigers scored their first goal in the 56th minute to give them some life.
Millsaps had a quick answer with their final goal of the day just a few minutes later in the 60th minute.
Luca Kistner (Munich, Germany) scored from about 30 yards from the net to give the match its final score of 4-1.
"It's always tough to go on the road especially in the playoffs, Sewanee is a tough place to play". Said head coach
Steve Voltz, "We felt like if we came out and did the things that we needed to do, then we had a chance. Sewanee came out strong in the second half but once we made it 4-1 I felt like we finally took the energy out of the game. I'm really pleased with our guys, now we have a tough game next week in the semifinals."
Millsaps now moves on the semifinals where they will play Centre on Friday for a chance to advance to the conference championship match. Game time is to be determined.
