Jackson, Miss. (Feb. 24, 2017) – Riding the momentum of a sweep in doubles, the Millsaps College men's tennis team went on to take an 8-1 decision over Covenant College Friday afternoon. Junior
Alex Centurion (Portland, Ore.) and freshman
Brandon Beck (Metairie, La.) both had victories in singles and doubles for the Majors.
Millsaps (6-2) had no trouble in the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles matches, winning both by 8-2 scores. The No. 3 doubles contest was a closer affair, but in the end the Majors' squad of junior
Cameron Doles (Metairie, La.) and sophomore
Cooper Cearley (Midland, Texas) prevailed over the team of Connor Shimmel and Trey Wood by a final of 9-7.
Needing just two points in singles play to clinch the match, Millsaps quickly picked them up in the Nos. 4 and 5 matchups. At No. 4 junior
Avinash Ananth (Hoover, Ala.) took a 6-0, 6-2 win to move the Majors to just a point away from the team win. Beck then provided that point in his No. 5 match, dispatching Ben Tonkel by a 6-2, 6-2 decision.
Millsaps went on to win two other singles matches in straight sets, with sophomore
Henry Friedler (New Orleans, La.) winning 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 and sophomore
Josh Shearin (Cordova, Tenn.) scoring a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Trey Wetjen at No. 6.
In the closest match of the afternoon Centurion split the first two sets of his No. 2 match against Chris Cox before storming back in the third to take a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 win. Covenant (3-4) picked up its lone point of the day at No. 1 where Matthew Harvie defeated junior
Diego Marti-Vertiz (San Louis Potosi, Mexico), 6-3, 6-4.
Millsaps will be back in action on Wednesday when it takes the short trip to Belhaven University for a match against its local rival.
