Majors Start Spring Break On Positive Note

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Mar. 10, 2017) – Millsaps College saw its men's tennis team play two matches today to start its spring break trip. The Majors won both, defeating host Huntingdon College, 7-2, and then taking down LaGrange College, 9-0, to move its winning streak to four.

Match 1 vs. Huntingdon

Millsaps (10-3) swept the doubles matches against Huntingdon (2-6) to go up early, 3-0. The Majors won 8-0 and 8-4 at the first and second positions before the No. 3 team of junior Cameron Doles (Metairie, La.) and sophomore Cooper Cearley (Midland, Texas) came up with a big 9-7 decision to complete the sweep.

Two of the first three singles points went Huntingdon's way, with the Hawks winning 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6 and 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2. At No. 1, junior Diego Marti-Vertiz (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) moved Millsaps within a point of the team win with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over John Jones. Freshman Brandon Beck (Metairie, La.) then put it away for the Majors, scoring a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3.

Also picking up singles wins for Millsaps was junior Cameron Doles (Metairie, La.) at No. 4 with a 6-2, 6-1 decision and sophomore Ryan Henry (Pontotoc, Miss.) at No. 5  where he took a 6-4, 6-4 win.

Match 2 vs. LaGrange

As it did in the first match of the day, Millsaps started strong against LaGrange (5-3) with a sweep in doubles. After winning 8-0 at No. 2 and 8-4 at No. 3, the No. 1 team of sophomore Davis Plummer (Richardson, Texas) and junior Alex Centurion (Portland, Ore.) completed the sweep by holding off their opponents, 8-5.

Millsaps quickly put the outcome in its favor with a pair of straight sets decisions in singles play. At No. 3, Plummer took the first singles point with a 6-0, 6-1 win. Freshman Jacob Niehaus (Gretna, La.) then clinched it at No. 5 with his 6-2, 6-1 victory over Drew Cartrell.

After three more straight set decisions, sophomore Josh Shearin (Cordova, Tenn.) put the finishing touches on the Millsaps victory with a come-from-behind win at No. 4. After dropping his first set to John Mitchell Benton, 6-2, he stormed back to keep the Panthers off the board with a 2-6, 6-2, 10-4 win.
