MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Mar. 10, 2017) – Millsaps College picked up a pair of key doubles points that proved to be the difference as the Majors edged past Huntingdon College, 5-4, in a non-conference women's tennis match this afternoon. Freshman
Natalie Toups (Baton Rouge, La.) notched the clinching win in singles play for Millsaps.
Millsaps (6-3) picked up the first point of the day when its No. 2 doubles team of sophomore
Tori Barbier (Metairie, La.) and freshman
Maggie Dabadie (Baton Rouge, La.) scored an 8-2 win. The Major's No. 1 pairing of freshman
Rachel Beck (Metairie, La.) and sophomore
Jordyn Kanak (Austin, Texas) were up 7-3 in their match when one of their opponents was injured, forcing the team to retire and give the point to Millsaps. Huntingdon (5-3) rebounded in the final doubles contest, scoring an 8-5 win.
Junior
Reya Hayek (Greenville, Miss.) picked up the first point in singles play, pulling out a 6-0, 7-6 win at No. 4 to put the Majors up 3-1. The Hawks bounced back, however, evening the match with two straight wins. Dusty Catala won at No. 1 by a 7-5, 6-1 score before Josie Waddell squared things up by coming back at No. 2 to defeat Beck, 1-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Playing at No. 3, junior
Mary Claiborne-Sharpe (Brownsville, Tenn.) put another point in the Millsaps column with a 6-4, 6-3 decision. Toups then gave Millsaps the "W" with a strong, 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 6. Huntingdon won the final match of the day, with Heather Tabor downing Barbier, 6-3, 6-3.
Now on its spring break trip, Millsaps continue from Alabama to Hilton Head, South Carolina where the Majors will take on Agnes Scott College on Tuesday, March 14 at 3:30 p.m.
