Millsaps Picks Up Pair of Wins

Jackson, Miss. (Mar. 4, 2017) – Playing in a pair of matches on its home courts, the Millsaps College men’s tennis squad came away with a pair of wins.

Jackson, Miss. (Mar. 4, 2017) – Playing in a pair of matches on its home courts, the Millsaps College men's tennis squad came away with a pair of wins. The Majors started the day with a close 5-4 decision over Meridian Community College before blanking Spring Hill College, 9-0. The two victories run the Majors record to 8-3 for the season.
 
Millsaps took two of the three doubles matches against Meridian CC, including the No. 2 team of freshman Jacob Niehaus (Gretna, La.) and sophomore Henry Friedler (New Orleans, La.) scoring an 8-2 win.
 
In singles play junior Cameron Doles (Metarie, La.) picked up the first point for Millsaps, taking a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5. Meridian CC came back with two straight decisions at Nos. 2 & 1 to square the match at 3-all, but the Majors came back to win two straight to clinch it. At No. 6 sophomore Ryan Henry (Pontotoc, Miss.) won 7-6 (6), 6-1 before Cooper Cearley (Midland, Texas) put the deciding point on the board for Millsaps, coming back from a first set loss to score a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 decision at No. 4.
 
Later in the afternoon against Spring Hill, Millsaps got off to a strong start in doubles, sweeping all three. The closest decision came at No. 2 where junior Diego Marti-Vertiz (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) and freshman Brandon Beck (Metarie, La.) defeated their opponents, 8-4.
 
Singles matches proved to be all straight sets wins for the Majors as they went on to complete the sweep. Beck clinched it at No. 6 with his 6-1, 6-0 victory over Ferdinand Amanor. Other highlights included sophomore Davis Plummer (Richardson, Texas) not dropping a game in his win at No. 4, and junior Alex Centurion (Portland, Ore.) coming back from being down 0-3 in the first set of his No. 1 contest against Lars Bjor to come back to claim a 6-4, 6-3 win.
 
Millsaps play two in one day again in its next action. The Majors will head to Montgomery, Alabama to take on Huntingdon College and LaGrange College on Friday, March 10 starting at 1:00 p.m.
